I won't be of the opinion Martinez lacks ambition until he's made his decision this summer. I can accept last summer he wanted to be loyal to Wigan, if he does get offers from Liverpool and Villa this summer and declines both then he does lack ambition.

It's funny though.Barry and Downing were both accused of being treacherous money grabbing gits when they left Villa, yet when Rodgers and Martinez display loyalty to their clubs they are branded as lacking ambition. It's a fine line.

I take your point but Milner & Young left for more money and weren't branded as such by most posters on here.

The distinction with Barry & Downing is that Barry said he wanted Champions League football then left for a team not even in the Europa League that had finished 4 places below us. Downing claimed he owed us for signing him whilst injured and said he was happy to stay, then left when he realised Liverpool wanted him.

As soon as the money poured into City we all knew they were going to do better than us.Personally after the service Barry had given us I wished him well. He'd riled me the previous summer with the Liverpool debacle but credit to him he still gave us a great season after MoN denied his move.Downing on the other hand owed the club IMO after drawing his wages for a non existent first season.
Anyway, i digress.Over the years i've heard players like Le Tissier and Steve Bull getting slagged off for not having any ambition yet there are a number of fans who cane Barry, a Villa player for eleven years, when he furthers his career. It narked me reading comments at the time Young left that "at least he's joined Man United". So fecking what?I couldn't give a shit if he went to Man Utd or Carlisle Utd, he aint playing for us anymore. It just seems somewhat warped that the likes of Collymore still has many fans among the Holte when he basically milked the club whilst strolling around yet Barry with ten times as many games and a profit margin of £11m is barracked.Funny old game.

Barry left for a club that at the time had finished lower in the league than Villa.

Barry left because he believed in the vision that Man City had sold to him. He believed had more chance of playing in the Champions League there than at Villa and his FA Cup and league champions medals are further vindication of his decision. I can be as one-eyed as the next Villa fan but even I can understand that.[/quote]

As I said Barry had been taited by the Liverpool saga the year before.  And at the time most people held Manchester City in contempt because as far as they were concerned, all they had to offer was filthy money.  There was not a belief that everyone that their money would automatically buy them the title, and many people were waiting with glee to see them self destruct under the weight of all the egos that were gathering there.

The thing that really did for Barry was the interview he gave to the News of the World the year before.  It turned people against him, and even through the season before he left, a lot of people were complaining about his lack of effort at the Villa, although it seemed OK to me.

Rodgers is now apparently odds-on for Liverpool.  If that happens I would love to see Martinez interviewed then rejected and Lambert appointed.

Yeah but Whelan will spin it to make it look like he rejected us again!

Yeah but Whelan will spin it to make it look like he rejected us again!

And it's Whelan that will be believed, not us, just like last Summer.

Whelan might have got away with it once with us, but if he tries to piss Liverpool around there'll be a completely different media agenda.

Whelan said yesterday that he was giving Martinez 2 days to decide. Decide what? If he misses that deadline what's he going to do...sack him?

The reason Whelan was able to portray the story as he wanted last year was because he got his version out first, where as we played a more dignified game and just released a vague statement.  Only way to beat him is to play his game, which Randy will never do.

Martinez is making a massive mistake if he doesn't leave this summer.
I think he is indecisive and lacking ambition. I don't want him around here. He can stay safe within Whelan's control where he is comfortable. Making his team a thrash bag for the rest of the PL for 90% of the season and thn winning a few games to survive.

Agreed.  Wigan are sure fire to go down next year.  Better teams are replacing the 3 that have gone down and Wigan's key players are leaving this summer.  If Martinez doesn't leave Wigan his stock will plummet and he will not have the opportunity of managing a big club for a very long time.  I'm sure he knows this and when Whelan wheels in him on Thursday for a decision I would put money on he just resigns without a club to go to (I'd be surprised if he went to Liverpool) and bet that he will end up somewhere shortly...

Anyway, Martinez / Lambert and Rodgers could be next years Paul Jewell.

I'd rather a bit more pedigree.

A side note ...........  I find it amazing that you all skipped over my ITK on Martinez from last summer.
