There are a number of plus sides to Martinez. The one being we'd not have to hear from Whelan bleating on about hum as if he was a piece of meat hanging at the market. He would hopefully make a couple of quick signings too. Rodallega is on a free, Victor Moses is in the last year of his deal and some bloke called N'Zogbia who played his best football under Martinez.

Him holding a press conference on Tuesday is worrying, as it means he is staying put IMO.

I think they should forget it and just go after Poyet now.

Unlikely. We know the sort of people they're looking for from the aborted OGS fiasco. Family reasons or not, if Lerner had gone in there with the sort of spending budget he gave MON or even Houllier then he'd have been here now.

I've decided I'd be happy with Martinez provided he was properly backed. I actually quite like the idea of him being our manager, seems very knowledgeable and articulate.

Not a bad manager but i still think we should cast the net further afield,Europe wide and have a proper look at who is out there.

He gave Houllier the money we got from Milner in fairness, not significantly more than that. McLeish still got 20 million last summer. Swansea spent less on their entire squad. The transfer budget argument is only valid if the manager coming in only has eyes on these shores.

True. That's why Arsne Wenger is a genius when it comes to finding great talent for minimum expense.

Really don't get this knowledgable / articulate bit
Wigan were / are dire every year up until the last 6 games
He's also signed a lot of crap players

RM always comes across well when interviewed.  But then so did TSM, prior to the Villa job.

I do have concerns about his transfer record and it's hard to ignore Wigwams league form for the first 6/7 months of the last two seasons.  But with better players he should  do better.  His style of football is more consistent with sides towards the top of the table than sides towards the bottom, whereas McLeish's attritional warfare was only ever suitable for small sides fighting for their lives.

I'd be reasonably happy with any one from Martinez, Lambert or Di Matteo.   Rodgers too, but that seems completely out of the question.   All of them would represent a step up from the last bloke (not hard) and it would be nice to go into the new campaign actually looking forward to it.

As i've before Ozzjim, Mcleish was funded entirely by the sales of young and Downing. Who do we sell this year to give the new guy 20m?

Funny, but I was thinking that pre OGS, when the talk was we were going the Director of Football route.

Think he'd be a good shout in that scenario.

Sorry, but how exactly was it a 'fiasco'??

the fact that we did it in the full glare of the press rather than OTR. That's not particulary the clubs fault  but it would be nice if we started tapping up people like the other 99% of clubs so we know their answer before we approach their club.

So what should they have done differently? Camouflaged his plane? Shut down Villa message-boards?

I think there will be some money after the season just gone. They have cost cut, but they are not suicidal.
