I'd be happy with Martinez, it really shouldn't be forgotten just what a small club Wigan really are.  Dave Whelan shooting his mouth off every five minutes doesn't change that.

Well the theory with Martinez is he plays stylish passing football with crap players and that given better players to work with he won't be at the bottom.
That logic was applied to TSM when he came in: "he was crap at the Sty but he had limited resources; with our squad we can't possibly be that bad."

I'm really in two minds about Martinez; I actually think Rodgers would be a better bet (but I guess his new contract takes hm out of the equation).

I though the theory with Mcleish was a return to MON's style and the players who couldn't play under Houllier would flourish under Hoof Mk2. Not sure anyone was expecting better football (apart from the board maybe)

I would be happy with Martinez now that OGS has gone out of the running. At Swansea he set out a way of playing which Sousa (unsuccessfully) and Rodgers (successfully) have picked up and followed. I think that is exactly what the board are looking for - setting out a philosophy/style of football which can run from the academy right through to the first team on a sustained footing, so there's a smoother passage through for 'the kids' to step up, and he ticks the boxes for a young vibrant manager. Not afraid to take on the big teams either. I think he'd do much better here than he has done at Wigan (bloody hell, shows just how far we've fallen!)

Failing that I'd also be happy with Lambert but not sure we can prise him away from Norwich.

I see that A-Ha's biggest fan, Mat Kendrick, has tweeted that Martinez is on Randy's radar. I don't know if thats the radar on his private jet or not, but it's on his radar nonetheless.

That is true, but it is also said he relegated Blues with the best squad they'd ever had.  Not sure what to think there.

That you can't polish a turd?

Two months ago martinez was being called to explain his team selections to an angry whelan after 2 wins in 28 games, since then his team have had a storming finish but im not convinced he could cut it at a bigger club.

People seem to have forgotten how bad wigan were until
March , on a plus side he might get the best from
Nzogbia - would much prefer lambert or rodgers to him , but he is better than some of the dross we are being linked to .

Whilst getting the right man is critical, we do need to get a move on because there is an awful lot of work to be done over the summer.

There is nothing wrong with Martinez, he's got shit players to work with at Wigan, He plays good football, just think what he can do with a chairman that backs him :)

In that case maybe we should be going for Whelan instead of Martinez. :P

To my mind Lambert seems to have changed his tune from 'come and get me' to 'I've never wanted to leave here' which suggests to me the offer he was hoping for never arrived.

OGS was only an initial plan B and has ruled himself out anyway.

AVB is probably unrealistic.

Looking at the criteria and candidates remaining, I fear the jigsaw is falling into place, I think Martinez is the one they've been after all along. They'll be taken in by Wigans late form in the same way they were fooled by McLeishs league cup win.

My god, I hope he goes to Liverpool.

Martinez 5/2, 3/1 in places. Lambert 7/2.
Who is Domingos Paciencia? 8/1??
Martinez was always my first choice although I did get excited when Ole appeared on the radar.

DB there was a touch of sarcasm in that post, he hasn't really backed him with millions, remember that Wigan are a selling club

I'm not sure about Martinez. I hear enough convincing arguments for as I do against.
I like how his teams play if not always effective and after being starved of decent football last season it would be interesting to potentially see some.

As things stand, I'd be happy if not delighted. And I'd certainly get behind him.

Please lord not Martinez

if you dont like his style of football thats fair enough, i am a big fan and would love to see him try and replicate it at VP with hopefully some better players that he can bring in

all this stuff about his teams not playing untill March is just a soundbite, he won the league with Swansea, OK it was div 1 but he still won it, probably not discimilar to winning the league in say.... Norway,  and you dont win a league by turning up in March,

its all about how you want Villa to play, i would like to see them play the Martinez way, think it might be the best stuff we will have seen for donkeys years
