See I'm not completely against the idea of Martinez, he does try and get his team to play good football. Also given some of the other names being mentioned, he looks pretty decent.

Yes, he tries, but Wigan are always around the bottom, and magage to put a few results together towards the end of the seson. I just don't get this Martinez thing, his teams don't turn up until March.

I know beggars can't be choosers, because if we end up with Steve Staunton or someone as manager I will be wishing that Martinez was with us. But I don't get the Martinez thing. Wigan put a good run together at the end of the 2011 to stay up. Wigan put a good run together at the end of the 2012 to stay up. That's the same outcome 2 seasons in a row. No sign of progression in those seasons. Granted he did well at Swansea. But is he that good that Liverpool and Villa are chasing him? Someone explain it to me?

Well the theory with Martinez is he plays stylish passing football with crap players and that given better players to work with he won't be at the bottom. That theory probably has some relevance with Liverpool but falls down a bit when you look at our players

Who says we are beggars? We just don't know what's going on behind the scenes at the Villa, just gossip and ITK from newspapers guessing and forums like this.
Some bloke called MM posts some sh*t and we all spend next few hours disecting it.

To be fair Wigan are a very small club who don't have much resource, surviving is a great result for them. Also whilst I'd much rather we were looking to the continent for a manager(we might be). I'd take Martinez over the likes of Roeder, Allardyce, Bruce etc.

Would be perfectly happy with Martinez, and I hope people get behind him if he does come.  I think he could do very well at Villa and it would be a very good step up for him, better than Liverpool would be.

You can pass your way into relegation quite easily - just look at WBA under Mowbray.  For a manager to be at a club like Wigan and then be a serious contender for a our job or Liverpool's, then he needs to take them to a secure position and stay clear of the dogfight.  Martinez has never done that, but managed to pull off a dramatic escape each season.

I suppose it's easy to then say "He kept them up playing good football", but that ignores the question of why they needed a dramatic escape in the first place.

Martinez. Just imagine what he could do with Randy's backing....

I'm undecided on Martinez. One the one hand, I agree, he hasn't progressed Wigan much, and it's a concern that they didn't get going until the final dozen games last season. On the other, last season they comfortably avoided the drop (compared to the season before, when it was last day of the season by the skin of their teeth) and they did so by beating some of the best teams in the league, by playing some good stuff, and because the manager changed formation and made some brave choices. So, we have seen that he can get an average (maybe below average) group of players performing above themselves.

He's also articulate, seems to understand his football, and I could see him being loyal and looking to stay with us for a length of time.

I'm on the fence with this one. I think we can do better, but I also think we can do far, far worse.

McAllister is bad enough, standing on the touchline looking futile. But him and Roeder. I feel sick.

McAlister certainly had us passing the ball towards the end of the season. I think we had 3 goals that included about 16 passes in each during the buld up. Hoof Man, he's not. A DOF would allow him to focus on the coaching.

To me, far more than Mcleish last season, the brief of Martinez at Wigan is to keep them in the premier league.  To my knowledge he has never been given the resources to do any more than that.  For instance was N'Zogbia, who had done so well for them the season before last, replaced in any way when he left?

McAllister won't get it. The players he fell out with and slagged him off in various interviews last season are still here and going nowhere

Well the theory with Martinez is he plays stylish passing football with crap players and that given better players to work with he won't be at the bottom.
That logic was applied to TSM when he came in: "he was crap at the Sty but he had limited resources; with our squad we can't possibly be that bad."

I'm really in two minds about Martinez; I actually think Rodgers would be a better bet (but I guess his new contract takes hm out of the equation).

That is true, but it is also said he relegated Blues with the best squad they'd ever had.  Not sure what to think there.
