Alright then.

Want: Rodgers, AVB, OGS (I am hoping still!)
Kinda ok but not very exciting: Martinez, Lambert.
Dont want: The usual crew of boring lower / mid table grafters.

Just over a week ago, Paul Lambert was being serenaded by 1000's of Villa fans!

Seems like more than a month ago!

What about that chap who was 2nd at Porto(?), in the news yesterday? (Domingos Paciencia (sp)

I have people I really don't want. Grayson, Di Matteo, Hughton, Bruce, McCarthy....

Fancy the coach who just won the FA Cup and Champions League? Nah mate, I'd rather have the manager of Norwich City.

Fair enough re: the other names on the list, but di Matteo has more credentials than anyone else being linked to us. You could make the Avram Grant argument, but the Chelsea of 2008 were far better than the Chelsea of 2012. Plus he did a good job at Albion - got them promoted, would probably have kept them up (they were outside the relegation zone when he was sacked). If I remember correctly, he led a newly promoted MK Dons team straight into the playoffs too. I'd certainly have him.

Disagree about OGS but agree with who you want. It really would be hard for me to get much enthusiasm up for Lamberts style of football.

Everybody has turned down Liverpool, at the moment.
We're ahead!

What about Martinez?  He has a lot of the attributes that people were praising in OGS (i.e. good style of football, intelligent, good knowledge of foreign transfer markets) and has at least been around the Premiership for a few years albeit has not had too much success.

We could go after AVB.  Or Roberto Di Matteo - he's just won a European Cup.

I could be cool with Martinez. I do worry he is overhyped by the media though. But yeah if it was Martinez vs Lambert I would go for Martinez, just. I really doubt we are talking to him though, unless Whelan has caught tact from someone all of a sudden :)

If he does get moved on by Chelsea and we were still without a manager, surely it is only logical to assume that he would come into the thinking?  Not too sure about him myself (particularly after his tenure at West Brom), but I'm sure he would be a candidate.

I'd rather have Martinez or Rodgers than Lambert. Or Paciencia. Or many people really.

Of course if he comes I'll be 100% supportive, but I might just be the least enthusiastic about the potential appointment of Lambert. He's not a bad manager, and would certainly do better than McLeish (I mean, come on), but he wouldn't restore the good times at Villa - he'd restore the doldrums. Like MON or Hitzfeld, but with no money, which means pragmatic, often dull football, especially at home, with an over-reliance on set-pieces, long-balls, crosses and counter-attacks.

I'd definitely prefer Rodgers to Martinez, because I think he has much more steel and drive about him and the way he approaches tactics, but Martinez essentially plays the game in a more entertaining fashion as well. There is no 'right way' to play the game in general, but the best way for us is the more entertaining managers approach to football, because we desperately need a bit of vibrancy and a bit of, sometimes reckless, entertainment. I'd rather finish 10th with a goal difference of -1 having scored 70 and conceded 71 than finish 9th with a +1 scoring 38 and conceding 37. I think Lambert is more likely to deliver the latter than the former.

Monty, as you probably know, I personally don't share your reservations about Lambert.  I think there is a world of difference between playing balls up to a front man's chest and feet and playing from there, and aimless hoofing up the pitch.  Graham Taylor was often criticised for being a long ball manager, but his style of play suited us well and brought good results first time round.  I guess it all comes down to the type of football you personally prefer really.

Not just that, but what works at the time. If GT came along and tried to introduce that football now, he'd be laughed out of town - the game has moved well beyond it. And it's not that Lambert is a hoofball merchant like Pulis or Allardyce, but that he prefers to react to the opposition and play long balls on the counter-attack, like Hitzfeld and MON in their own different ways. That kind of football has a limited shelf-life, and it wouldn't be long before we get stuck in the doldrums - again.

But isn't that a bit like the football Spurs, Man Utd and Chelsea play?  They seem to get the ball forward quite quickly and in the case of Spurs and Man Utd still favour traditional wingers at times.
