Brendan Rogers has turned down Liverpool approach so we can completely rule him out as a possibility
Or, he may feel that a move to Villa has more advantages in terms of the expectations, player-group and lack of OTT media pressure.

It's clear (to me) that whilst there are contingencies should anything go horribly wrong, there really isn't anybody except Solskjaer getting this job.

It's all done and dusted bar the formalities.

Pat Murphy on R5 seems to be a bit 'off the pace' with it. That'll piss him off when he catches up!

I really hope you're right. But women are funny. I hope the toilet on Randy's jet was clean.

Don't forget, it's not just a decision for us, it is one for him and his family, too. He's got to decide if he thinks the job is too much too soon, he has to speak to the chairman and discuss his vision for the club, he's got to be happy his family would enjoy moving back to the UK.

That's a lot for him to take in.

If I were him, and were offered the job, I think I'd ask for the weekend to think about it. Wouldn't surprise me if he does the same.

One thing I will say that, as we've been told for a while now, we are cutting back and trimming our expenditure. Solskjaer is bound to ask about how much money he's going to have for team building. He might for all we know get told it's what he can raise by sales, in which case, he could well turn it down, despite everything else being right.

What I'm trying (and failing a bit) to say is that there are a lot of factors to sort out, and I wouldn't be getting convinced of anything just yet.

Statement from the board

http://mobile.avfc.co.uk/default.aspx?s=news-display&aid=2776912

I'm now confused
Club statement: Board on manager search
18-05-2012

The Aston Villa board has embarked upon an interview process which will lead to the appointment of a new manager.

This process will be focused and consistent with the board's objectives which are to secure a manager who can help to reinvigorate the club and bring some vibrancy back to Villa.

We are aware that certain individuals have been linked with our managerial vacancy but, out of respect to all potential candidates and any clubs they may currently be employed by, we will not discuss specific individuals by name.

We will update supporters when we have more news.

Fairly standard I imagine. I still suspect Solskjaer is the prime candidate.

I believe that the latest OS statement is to be read in the context of the previous statement of intent, following the dismissal of Alex McLeish. The Villa Board are aware of the ambitions and preferences of the fans and wish to invite and appoint, accordingly.

I'd be interested in a vibrant young manager.

I hope the Villa get one.  Absolutely.

I'm pleased that they want to talk to other candidates.  I hope that they appoint the right man, rather than the available man.

2 points in response to that.

Firstly, of course he has to consider his family but I think this is more advanced than might appear and also, if he he wants to manage in the PL as his stated ambition has been, he would have had to uproot sooner or later.

Secondly, I think he will have some decent financial backing.
