It's a very very brave appointment if it is going to be him and you kind of applaud them for having the balls to do it, but bearing in mind the season we've just had and how long and where he's been managing, it's just too big a gamble for me.

a bit off the subject, but don't half of the norwegian league play on artificial pitches? that will change his style for sure.

Reminds me  bit of the late 1970's. I was in the Lake District and phoned home to see how things were. My Dad told me we had just signed Jimmy Rimmer from Arsenal and i must confess that it didn't really inspire me. The rest as they say is history. A Villa legend. You just never know.......

I'm feeling rather negative so please excuse the following a little.

It feels like our stock has fallen massively, so now can't get a manager from either Norwich, Swansea or for crying out loud Wigan.  OGS might be brilliant but equally we could be heading for a hat trick of disasters, if we do appoint OGS a 1 year deal would be prudent with an option to extend if successful.

I feel totally under underwhelmed.

This.  Substitute the word "Norway" for "Scotland" and we have the measure of the man as a manager right now.  He has proven very little thus far to suggest he should be managing a Championship team let alone a Premier League team.  This feels like a wind up, and I would be thinking it is a wind up, if it wasn't for the fact that he is now favourite for the job! Dear fcuking me.

yep. shows that a little star dust overrides his record and experience in a lot of people's minds. If his name was Henry From, Brian flies or another one of those comedy manager names from Norway, people would be saying WTF is he? But the baby faced assasin must be good...

I'm genuinely astonished that people think this is a good move for Villa.  This is the type of appointment maybe Wolves should have made now that they've been relegated.  This is Bryan Robson going to Boro or Roy Keane going to Sunderland - a mediocre club going for a "big" totally unproven name.

Has Derren Brown been around here and hypnotized everyone ?  This screams "small time".  This screams  "reckless gamble" and it screams another bumpy season next year.  Oh, and six more points to man utd too.  Randy must be absolutely broke if this is the best that he can come up with to follow Fergie's letter and McLeish.

Who would be your choice Billy?

Well Bob, if the likes of Lambert (my preferred choice) isn't interested (which is a worryingly sad state of affairs) and money is an issue, I would like to see Randy have a scout around the more experienced (but just as cheap) names in European football.

A year left on his contract, difficult second album to record after getting to the top of the charts - perfect time to leave, I'd say.

Not exactly going tits up for him.  They're second, one point behind the leaders on 18 points after 9 games and are unbeaten at home in 12 months.  Only blip looks like they lost the first three away games but won last time out 0-5.*

* all based on 5 minutes research of Norwegian newspapers wouldn't claim to know much about Norwegian football, can barely be bothered to follow the Danish league.

I quite like the idea of OGS, he might just be what we need at the moment.

And, he knows what it's like to win things. Maybe he could instil that sense of wanting victory back into the club

The last time I'd had this feeling was when I heard MON was in talks with us. I was only about 12 so I didn't have the foggiest idea who he was, but my dad was jumping around the living room so I knew he was a good 'un.

If you line up all the potential and gettable frontline candidates - Martinez, di Matteo, Lambert, Rogers, Solskjaer, I'd say four will never build a Champions League-winning team. Solskjaer might. It's a gamble, but let's die trying.

I completely agree with this. I'm quite excited by the thought personally.

I think he may need an older head alongside him as a coach and also someone that has some link to the club... or is that an old-fashioned view?

That's a good summation of how I feel about it but, if true, at least it will be interesting to find out about him. I had a feeling of dread before the start of the previous season so maybe that's still clouding my feelings.

Difference now is you know who he is, but have no idea if he can manage in the premier league.

JG had no experience managing a Premiership club......

True, but he was a former player and had been an assistant manager at the club so knew the place pretty well.

He also won nothing.

Kevin MacDonald? Perhaps with Ian Taylor/Southgate/Laursen?
