Lambert is just a 2nd rate MON. I'd be gutted if he turned up. even has the same disloyalty gene.

No, MON is a second-rate Lambert. Very similar in some ways, but Lambert has many ideas to implement their shared footballing template, whereas MON only has one.

Don't agree with that

Some of these little clubs don't have half a high opinion of themselves. One season in the Premier League and they're making plans to challenge the Mancs.

I might be completely wrong about him but Rodgers actually gives that impression too. I think he's a good manager, but Lambert is just right in every way for us.

Rodgers is very self-confident certainly, but never seems to me be in a 'better than thou' kind of way.

Besides, I wholeheartedly disagree with this notion of Lambert's perfection. Norwich played the most direct football in the league last season outside of Stoke and Blackburn (I won't call whatever it was we did 'direct' because that implies a plan). The direction we should be going in is one of nurturing a playing style based on possession, not a return to, as I allude to above, a sophisticated version of MON-ball.

I said he's right for us. He's not perfect. I'm guessing then you didn't watch his team competently knock it around up at Arsenal with no fear whatsoever. If you are going to dismiss Lambet for his style of play then you could do the same with Redknapp, who with Crouch up front in 2009/10 played more long balls than we did with Carew.

Let's not split hairs here, 'right for us in every way' and 'perfect [for us]' may as well be the same thing.

Sure, I saw them pass it well against a team who played up the pitch and gave them more space to do so than other teams. Lambert's solution to packed defences is the same as MON's - get it long and get it wide. It's more nuanced than MON, but the basics are the same, and they wouldn't suit us, I think.

By right for us, I'm not just talking about his football. I'm also referring to his age, ambition, development, how he would perceive the opportunity, willingness to buy into what we are and where we want to go etc etc. There are other managers, like Rodgers who play better football, but he isn't going to walk into Villa Park today and get our current squad to do it. It will take more time. It would be a lot like Houllier found. Lambert's versatility in that regard would be an asset. He also isn't MON in that he is willing to learn about the game and doesn't have the "I've got it all figured out" attitude.

If we're talking about using the players we already have, someone like Rodgers is going to be more appropriate than Lambert - I think we've proved long balls to Bent don't work. Players like Bannan and Makoun seem almost like stereotypical Swansea signings, and for Ireland read Sigurdsson (facetious comparisons, I know, but the similarities are greater than with Wes Hoolahan or Simeon Jackson). For me, Rodgers has more balance between teamwork and individual expression, and certainly equals Lambert's appetite for learning about the game. He'd also do more with our brilliant training facilities, and has more experience of coaching at the top level with Chelsea.

I'm with Monty on this one...given the current playing squad, Rodgers would be more suitable to get the best results on the pitch. The only problem is the back four who IMO all need replacing with the exception of Collins (Dunne, Warnock and Hutton are liabilities waiting to happen).

I'm not convinced, doubtless good coach he is, Rodgers will be all that once removed from the Swansea bubble.

I go with Rogers as well. I actually enjoy watching Swansea play more than any other team last season. I also think it would fit many of our players. I can see Ireland & Bannan thriving under him.

It would be nice to have some respect for how we play again as well.  We havent had that for a long long time.

I don't know who's coming in but the last 25 pages of this thread have been more entertaining than Villa's season.

I've said a few times this season that if Swansea had a player like Bent to put the ball in the back of the net then they'd be comfortably in the top half of the league, and with additional quality throughout the team I'm sure they'd have won more away games too.

We have players who are more comfortable with the passing game so if Rodgers can bring in a few additions and get them playing the way Swansea do then it would bring results and be very entertaining. After the last couple of seasons, I think that a top 10 finish whilst playing entertaining attractive football would be very pleasing to most Villa fans.

He also speaks very well during interviews so would be a credit to the club if the board can secure his services.

Yeah, why would he move from Swansea City to Aston Villa?  I just can't work it out.

Rodgers would definitely need the support of the ownership of the club to reinvent the side and say to some of the bigger players, 'adapt or move on'. He'd need fans to be much more patient than they have been - both in giving him time to get his ideas across and during games where we'd be passing the ball and seemingly going nowhere (and doubtless there'd be some early games where we really would go nowhere and lose as as a result).

So I do think he's more of a risk than lambert.

But I think we've reached such a nadir that even the grumpy buggers in the trinity might be pleased to see a side playing with some identity and game plan. And I would dearly love villa to be synonymous with good quality passing football, wit and imagination, and to give our kids the chance to develop rather than just learning to fight

express & star reporting today that PF has had a telephone conversation with MM ? If this is true, it really does make you wonder if our current malaise is ever going to end? i can't beleive they would be so stupid.  I told people not to panic yesterday about this awful rumour; if it comes to fruition there will be anarchy.

I think McCarthy's appointment could be wrapped up quite quickly, judging by the betting markets.
