Chelsea in also a non-starter, IMO.

My thoughts, too. Now who else is there in the PL that will be looking for a manager this summer? Racist FC should be but will probably stick with KKK for another season. The Baggies? Do me a favour. Redknapp is staying at Spuds, Moyes likewise at Everton, Barcodes happy..

Fair points, maybe there aren't too many Prem jobs open in the summer, but reading what Capello said re London I believe he's throwing his hat into the ring for the Chelsea job. I can't see him wanting any other job on offer.

Quote
Basically, Capello says he'll either take a job in the PL or he'll retire and take a media job. Why not Aston Villa?

Why would he want to spend his footballing dotage here? There's a lot of issues he'd have to tackle, on little money as we keep being told, and I doubt that this is the sort of challenge he's after.

Quote
I'd be interested to hear from Risso and any other bean counter regarding the clubs finances. Does it make sense for Randy to invest as part of our financial recovery (given the right football management team, obviously)?

I'd like to hear the answer to this as well!

I'm only guessing but Lerner must have a criteria for next appointment, IF he sacks Eck i.e.

finish top 10/avoid relegation
good spotter of talent/buys cheap shite
cheap to hire/local therefore avoids relocation costs

etc.

that narrows it down to er Hughton.

I'd think Rodgers and Houghton also meet that criteria, just with the added cost of compensation to their clubs.

Oooh Rogers and Hammerstein, marvellous.

Ooops, sorry, wrong thread.

I think back to this time last year when we entertained thoughts of Benitez becoming our new manager, and remember who we actually ended up with. I doubt we'd even make a tentative approach to Capello, let alone progress discussions with him after that.

Technically, there is a vacancy at Chelsea, and I'm sure that's who Capello is referring to. He's too respectful to actually name the club.

Yep, that's what I was thinking too. We all thought Benitez would be the man, but then we found out that we had no money. If we couldn't find money last year for Benitez, then I can't see how anything has changed this year in regards to Capello.

Capello is a very competent manager, but I don't think Lerner/the board wants to work with such a strong personality. And I don't think he would have put up with the kind of treatment McLeish has been given for very long.

Capello is too expensive. It wouldn't happen.

Apparently Benitez wanted a lot of transfer cash.  Cash we did not have.  It was rumoured at the time that he was telling the press that he wanted the Villa job because he wanted a long term project, whereas from what I have read here, what he actually wanted was to buy “success”.

With regards to the likes of Capello, Benitez and sat AVB, it would be nice to think that one of these star mangers genuinely would like the challenge of building a club up with limited resources.  It’s a sad reflection on them - and football - that this is only possible when money is thrown at the problem.

Surely, if they explained that this was a long term project and money would not be available for transfers etc, then their reputations would actually be enhanced by any improvements from the club.

Furthermore, as demonstrated by MON and AMc’s salaries, on an individual level they’re likely to highly rewarded financially too.

Based on the current set-up, the club needs a big personality manager as there is pretty much zero other footballing nous within the club.

I fear that our next appointment might be a continental style “coach” rather than a club manager and the vacuum could get even bigger.

I'm not sure that Capello is the type of Yes man the board want, even if he would be interested and we could afford him. Its perhaps a bit 'Toon Army' to think he'd be in the frame.

I'm stunned there is even a conversation about Capello on here. 65 year old highly successful club football managers don't roll into rebuilding projects. They take gigs like Hiddink does - loads of money short term international projects or finishing jobs at top clubs, for loads of money aiming to win things now. Capello ain't coming to Villa Park to oversee the implemenation of austerity measures, and rebuild our dented image.

Let's imagine Randy wants to stop hemorrhaging money and actually start making some back. What better way than bringing in somebody that knows the game inside out. Even on a two year contract, we could still after offer him a position upstairs on the board. Salary won't be an issue (according to Capello) so we need to make sure the project is interesting enough.

Randy and Capello can spend their spare time discussing art. A marriage made in heaven (providing Randy is prepared to realistically back his man and his man is prepared to be realistic).

This is exactly my point, you have just put it better than me.

If money were no object, etc, I'd prefer Louis Van Gaal anyway. Ah, there's nothing wrong with dreaming.

How about Capello in a DOF role with someone like Martinez as manager/coach?
