One thing I'm not sure about for Martinez is his transfers - Tim Vickery was talking recently about Mauro Boselli and how his agent touted him around virtually every Premier League club even though it was obvious he was never going to be good enough or adapt.

The only manager to be led by the chap's agent into paying £6.5m for him was Martinez.

Aye, but how many decent signings has Martinez made for not a lot of cash?  I'd say his ratio of good to bad favours the good...
I'd say Moses and if we are being generous, Al-Habsi, Maloney and Alcaraz.

Not exactly spectacular for three seasons work.

Valencia, palacios, n'zog (there IS a good player in there somewhere!), Figueroa...
All signed by Steve Bruce.

As was James McCartby.

Martinez's record is more along the Jason Scotland, Jean Beausejour, Steven Gohouri, Hendry Thomas level.

so Bruce signed all the best players but cant get them to play, Martinez cant sign a decent player but gets what he's given to play well

Easy Peasy

Martinez - Manager + Bruce - DOF = Dream Team

Martinez signed McCarthy.

But yes, his overall transfer record at Wigan is patchy.

He did sign the bulk of the players currently doing well at Swansea though.

Now Spurs wont be looking for a new manager - I reckon we stand a chance with Rodgers.

Spurs were never likely to be looking at the likes of Rodgers or Martinez anyway.

IF McLeish goes then they cant afford to mess up 3rd time round...appointing new managers is proving to be a very expensive exercise for the Randy and co. I hope they can learn from their mistakes and go in search of the right man for the job rather than another cost cutting exercise, and if recruiting the right manager means sacrificing part of the transfer budget then so be it.

Pay whatever it takes to get AVB, Rodgers or Lambert...no messing around. All 3 of these managers have the potential to work with our young squad, make some shrewd young signings and mould them into the Villa team of the future. I would like to see what AVB can actually do...a young manager with fresh ideas working with young players...it sounds like an amazing project for any up and coming manager with a point to prove.

I wonder how much Redknapp's heart will be in it next season if Spurs miss out on 4th place?  Not being England boss or playing in the Chumps League would mightily piss him off I reckon.

even the most experienced managers make bad signings. Part of Martinez's could just be down to learning the management game, the budget he is allowed and the scouts that he has entrusted with finding players. He'll still make some bad decisions, but one would hope as he became more experienced he'll make better choices. You're point about Swansea is valid because he bought them to play at a lower level and they've developed well enough together to be more than competent at the PL level.

I stand corrected then...my bad  ;D

Prob all recommended by the sith overlord to Bruce in that case...

I was worried about Houllier's transfer record at Liverpool, yet his dealings here were probably the best bit of his tenure.

Makoun and brought Walker in on loan.

I suppose you could count Pires, but it's not like he had too many choices outside the transfer window.

And Bradley, who wasnt really given a proper chance.
I think once he settled he would have been an asset.

I think it's a bit unfair to say Martinez's record is patchy.  He's managed to keep Wigan in the PL for a few years now, that's as much as can be expected at that club.  Getting the kind of quality to sign with that as the ambition takes some doing.  Players are clearly there for the money and use Wigan as a stepping stone to better things.  The same can be said of us and others alike but we have more ambition than Wigan.  Certainly more than "do well here and you might get noticed by others". N'zog being a case in point.
