He's more doomed than Mcleish is. You can't do the England job without the press at least on side and with the various redknapp/MON/whoever factions upset their men have been overlooked he'd need to win the thing to have a chance of seeing this time next year. Don't like his style of football but he's basically an honourable man and i haven't been able to follow the press reports because there's an undercurrent of sneer in everything they print or say. again like Mcleish it's a car crash we can/could all see coming

Give it till christmas latest before he's called Horseraddish Hodgson.

But just like Villa there are not that many candidates, based on the criteria ( he has to be English) They did not apoint Rednapp because they have no idea what other skelletons are likely to jump out of the cupboard, and there are plenty that his media mates have so far covered up.

well there isn't many candidates true, but then the F. A. fuelled the Redknapp thing..  Instead of knocking the rumours on the head months ago, they let if run so they had half the Chelsea/United/Liverpool regulars endorsing him and the press salivating over his arrival. again, its like Villa with Mcleish - if they'd told everyone they were aiming low, then maybe people wouldn't be so disappointed,

I'm with Mazrim on this one, as I said in the other football thread, I see Hodgson being a repeat of the Mclaren era. He's an average manager in my view and the press are already gunning for him, the tone of questioning at his introduction said it all. The old guard of Terry, Gerrard and Lampard have already shown how disruptive they can be when they don't get their way and they've already said - in so many words - he's not their choice. I hope I'm wrong but thats how I see it.
In which case, well done the FA.

Rather than pandering to dimwits they've made the right decision rather than the popular one. They've employed the most experienced and best qualified manager rather than the one The Sun says they should have appointed.

They don't get much praise, but they can have it for this.

The proof will be when he picks his first squad. If the entire set up have any balls they will use the European Championships as a platform to really have a go at the World Cup. They won't take the old has been, disuptive wasters, and will invest in blooding younger players to mentally and technically prepare them for international competition. I have zero faith, whoever the manager is that they will do that, or indeed set in place structural changes to the game as Spain and Germany have. As long as the PL is king in England, the national team will be an afterthought. English football has its head firmly stuck up its arse and until that changes from the grass roots up, Hodgson or whoever will be on a hiding to nothing.

Why not have a go at the Euros?

It’s not that we wouldn’t have a go.  It’s more that we - well Hodgson - might be wise to drop a few of the names and play hungrier and less corrosive young players as opposed to Terry, Lampard, Ferdinand and Gerrard.  That doesn’t mean that we don’t go for the Euros it’s just that it would be perceived that we’d be building for the future.

Woy going to England feels like GT moving to Villa, the press would have preferred 'arry so poor woy doesn't stand a chance. I hope he does well!

Already the front page of todays rag is nothing short of disgraceful - a personal attack on his first day FFS

One of the many reasons i dont follow England with such enthusiasm as i do Villa is the politics involved. Take Sven with Walcott - takes him purely due to the fact that Arsenal only had a single English player in their squad and a team like them have to be represented. And never played him!!

I have never known an England coach pick a team on form rather than reputation and i see Roy as being no different - but i dont think its his fault - the media and politics always get in the way

This is the main reason Clough never got the job as he would have upset the billy big bollocks of the time. I have always felt that once you have over 10 caps then the player decides when its time to quit - look at the backlash GT got when he dragged an aging Lineker off

As far as Roy over Bagpuss - was a little disappointed only for the fact it would have been the Emporers new clothes with the spiv - he would have been embarrassing wathcing him being tactically outwitted by vastly superior  coaches

What a load of utter tosh.

Not least because at the time of the 2006 World Cup Arsenal had Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole in their squad. Both of whom were picked in the England squad.

Roy Hodgson is an intelligent man who knows world football and systems inside out . His problem will be the press who will hound him and his family as soon as anything goes wrong, and the players. When I say the players I mean Terry/Lampard/Ferdinand/Ashley Cole and that ilk. Terry is dispensible so are Lampard and Ferdinand. Ashley Cole has always played well for England but does things his way and probably isnt adaptable to any new ideas that Hodgson may implement.
We do have believe it or not some very good young players but does Roy have a chance

History tells me...no.

Good post . exactly . I hope he does well , I dont follow England much as I hate the Terry and Cole tossers in the team etc but the press make out they know everything and they know fuck all .   Poor bloke , he dont deserve that shite , they should be getting behind him.

Exaxtly.

it would be like a PL club having a 'transitional season' where they blood new and younger players to build a foundation for the seasons to come.

I agree with most of the sentiment here that Woy will have a tough time from the press; if only because the FA have wrong-footed them on the appointment of King 'arry.

The size of the shit-storm awaiting Woy depends on the choice of first squad, performance in the Euros, etc. His best opportunity to avoid / minimise the storm will be his choice of support staff: if, for instance, he has Pearce as his No.2, we may see the players and media cut him some slack. Since Pearce knows the younger players, this would be a very sensible move.

We may not even qualify for the World Cup.We have however qualified for the Euros so we should be focusing totally on that and picking the best players available to have a go at winning it.Who knows what will be in two years time.Rooney may be retired through injury and we may have a 17yr old boy wonder leading the charge.Football is a now thing.Look after the present and the future takes care of itself

My 'take' on the Walcott thing was always that Wenger extracted an agreement for Walcott to be taken along as a 'development opportunity' for one of England's high-potentials; the likelihood of him every having got a game was very low. Bizarre, I know.
