Redknapps been in the press too often for the wrong reasons. That may also have been a consideration. He likes to spout off a fair bit. Hodgson shuns the limelight and is more likely to just get on with it. I think he'll do well. It's like they've said regarding Keegan. He was the peoples choice and that turned out to be a disaster. Temperament is important too. They don't want a manager who might throw his toys out the pram and walk out again (Capello, KK), or someone who might drop a bollock somewhere along the line (Hoddle).

I think Hodgson will be similar to Venables. Not spectacular but he'll organise the team well and we may well have an impact on a tournement. Plus I can get behind Hodgson, whereas I want to punch Redknapp in his half melted face!

There's not a manager out there, who's English, who could turn us into a tournement winning side any time soon. Redknapp couldn't. I sense, and agree, that the FA just want to go about this quietly with a solid, experienced manager. The 10 mill they save on having to pay off Spurs for leatherface can be invested into youth development.

You never know, he might actually do OK.

When was "ok" last accepted by England fans and the press? Every team seems to be the golden generation expected to lift the World Cup.

Yeah cause we really are the best team in the World and we should win every competition and beat every team by a cricket score.

Re being thrown into a big tournement - I think it is a good thing. He has the players away for 6 weeks, and if he over achieves and gets to say a semi final, he is set for the next 3 years, with players respect behind him. If I were him I would pick a decent amount of youth in the squad, and leave out Terry and quite possibly Gerard.

I'd take Gerard as he's normally one of our better players at major tournaments, but leave the likes of Terry, Lampard, Ferdinand at home.

I do think Hodgson will do quite well, but aiming to win the Euro's is pushing it a bit, I can't see much past Germany/Spain myself.

I think he is a great choice and I really hope he does a good job because our press will bloody torture him if he does not.

Tbf I think most people realistically expect us to get to the quarter-finals and hope that we can get beyond that.

I don't think many people expect us to win any tournament we enter.

I'm with Mazrim on this one, as I said in the other football thread, I see Hodgson being a repeat of the Mclaren era. He's an average manager in my view and the press are already gunning for him, the tone of questioning at his introduction said it all. The old guard of Terry, Gerrard and Lampard have already shown how disruptive they can be when they don't get their way and they've already said - in so many words - he's not their choice. I hope I'm wrong but thats how I see it.

But I tell you what , if England didn't have him, and he falls out with Spurs over it, I'd be more than happy with Redknapp at Villa, never liked him as a bloke but one of the few managers I think will certainly improve us risk-free (as opposed to a Lambert, Martinez, Rodgers, johnny foreigner gamble).

Old Woy isn't the sexy, rentaquote type the press wanted.  They will be after him from the minute go.  I think he's a steady eddie, nothing flash but a brilliant technical brain.  I'm pleased the so called people's favourite didn't even get an interview.  He's crooked rubbery faced fuck and I hope we put a nail in their 4th place coffin on Sunday.

McLeish OUT!!!

I don't think expectations are very high now at all. I'd say with the lateness of the appointment and how poor we've been in the last two tournements (a no show in the last Euro's, followed by the WC debacle) is there anyone out there who expects us to get any more than a last 8 (if that). A lot of people don't fancy us to get out the group.

With that in mind I think Roy has a certain freedom to fail afforded to him for this tournement. We don't have the weight of expectations. If we can play without that weight and pressure, and just relax, we might do okay.

I fancy us to make the last 4. Which will surprise most if we manage it. It's the first time in decades where we aren't expected to do much at all.
I would hope Woy will get rid of the old guard, so called golden generation. They've let us down consistently at this level and bottled the big stages. There should be enough quality for us to give a good account of ourselves.

Interesting that the manager of the English national team is earning the same as McLeech! What we were our board thinking?

In which case, well done the FA.

Rather than pandering to dimwits they've made the right decision rather than the popular one. They've employed the most experienced and best qualified manager rather than the one The Sun says they should have appointed.

They don't get much praise, but they can have it for this.

He's also managed three different National teams before England, good choice I reckon.
