Well now lets see after reading all the comments on this thread and Andy Grays comments in the Sunday Murcury.I am not inspired to think that we will ever get a manager to take our great club back to the glory days, and for some of the names mentioned well we get rid of one scots moron why do we need another.Bring in somebody who will be able to take the club forward remember the days of Tommy Docherty another scots moron.

Don't forget the good that Tommy Docherty did when he first came to us.
I would go easy on the 'scots moron' bit as well. People will, rightly, take offence. Too much of it on here lately.

Considering the role that Scots also played in the early history of our club, it's an ignorant statement as well as an offensive one.

He wasnt successful at Chelski for a number of reasons, but I think AVB would do a great job managing the Villa revival...a young manager with a project to develop a young team. Clear out the rest of the dead wood and overpaid in the summer, and let him bring in some fresh new talent. I dont think any of us can expect decent results straight away after the last 2 years but if he can provide us with entertaining football and keep us midtablish with young exciting prospects then I would be happy with that. If we can afford and entice him then he should be the number one candidate.

Failing that, swoop for Lambert or Rodgers...stay well clear of the usual names on the managerial merry go round and anyone previously linked with the job in the last 2 years.

AVB would do a great job (as I have no doubt he would have at Chelsea given time). But there is 0 hope of us getting him. He'll go to a Champions League team. And I imagine there is Chelsea's customary 1 year no-compete clause in his severance anyway. (Not that we'd be competing with them anyway)

Solskjaer is a great shout

Two questions:

1. Martinez turned us down last year. What make it more likely he'll say yes now?

2. Can anyone cite a successful uk example of the director of football role?

still struggling to see a decent candidate given the conditions he'll have to work under. Likes of Lambert/Rodgers, what are you offering them? The chance to be impoverished at a bigger club but without the team they built and precious little money or time to build one with? If your at Swansea or Norwich then expetations are such that you'd have a season on two to put it right- if either one of them were scraping the bottom next season then the knives will be out, just like the current guy and the one before him. Maybe the clubs' status, history or salary will attract them but taking off the Villa tinted glasses, i can't see the big attraction

I hadn't even considered Solskjaer.  He doesn't tick the Premiership managerial experience box so maybe Randy should ask Lord Ferg what he thinks.

Martinez now makes the most sense.  He's ready for a change, a bigger club and has plenty of experience.  He's what we need right now.

If any of the new breed of managers discussed on here feel safer at Wigan, Swansea and Norwich they are simply not for us. This is Aston Villa and to compare us with any of the above is a joke whatever our current circumstances.

Levvy and Arnasen. The DOF at Newcastle (name escapes me).

I think we could list numerous choices.

The problem we have is that we are [at the moment] a mid - bottom premier league team with no money to spend and a squad of players that need completely rebuilding and that struggle at times to play any kind of football!

How many managers of a calibre that would make us happy and make Villa competative would want that job?

Not many I fear

I would like to see a Brian Little-esque appointment.

A manager on his way up and is clued up on how the game is at this current moment in time.

Lambert and Rodgers fit into this category, but I'm sure there are others.

no matter where we think we are in terms of league position, we still still pay top 20 (in Europe ) manager wages

i think there would be plenty of takers

I wouldn't be totally against Solksjaer if I'm honest. Likeable, and has done well at Molde from what I can gather.
