Just a point on this groundswell of support for GT as a director of football/ technical director:  Wasn't that the brief he was given when he returned to the club in 2001?    Whilst JG was still manager.

That didn't go to well, IIRC.  The less said about his work when JG left from 2002 onwards the better. 
He is guaranteed a place in the affections of most Villa fans for what he did between 1987/90.
But things move on.   If we do embrace the model of a DoF, I'd prefer to see us broaden the search out a little.  Villa connections shouldn't be a prerequisite.  Competency should be priorities 1,2 and 3.

Bang on. People are criticising Lerner for appointing people on the basis of being friends with them, then saying the way forward is to appoint people with Villa credentials like SGT and Laursen. Well, isn't that just us advocating the hiring of people we like?

No, the way to do this is to go for the best possible people without sentimentality. If these people do well at Villa, they will then have achieved hopefully similar levels of affection with Villa fans as Taylor and Laursen. We have to move on.

There's people we like and there there are great wise football heads that bring a depth of experience, both good and bad. Coupled with his love of our club, I would advocate Sir Graham as Chairman as opposed to any director of football. We need a wise head at the top steering the ship, and there are few wiser.

Almost every Villa fan I know actually uses the example of Hughton's potential appointment as proof that we don't care about the Blues connection. I'm glad the guy in the Sun brought up Hughton, as if he were at any other club than Blues he would also be a candidate. Good on the guy in the Sun for not subscribing to the bullshit myth about our apparent prejudice against McLeish because of his Blues connection.
