Mentioned it in a previous post, but John Deehan said in a radio interview earlier in the week that it was stipulated last summer that the new manager could only bring one member of his coaching staff with him and that they had to work with the existing coaches (K Mac and Sid) .  Deehan said that he thought that was the reason a number of candidates turned the job down and surely it would be a sticking  point if they are hiring again this summer.

Myself can:t see why any true villa fan would want to put names forward for the managers job most sorry all those mentioned are either failures or unproven.Yes get rid of the Moron we have but bring in some one who is a proven manager at the highest level or villa will never be a force to be reckoned ever again.

And your suggestion is?

Looking back through his posts he'd go for David Moyes. Who many have mentioned and whose credentials, while good, aren't all that much better than others mentioned. Besides which, I'd be very surprised if he came.

I'd love Moyes to come. But as you've said, it's not going to happen.

And he certainly wouldn't fit Terry's criteria of success at the highest level... presumably that means having won the Champions League, Premier League or La Liga? So basically only the likes of Guardiola, Mourinho, Hitzfeld or Ferguson would do.

I just want someone to come in that makes me feel excited about what's going to happen, either through a slight sense of the unknown or through it being someone who inspires trust. I don't mind what he's done before, but I want to know what his plans are for Villa. Of the names mentioned so far, the one that I find interesting is Di Matteo. The other one who I wouldn't at all mind is Hodgson, perhaps with a younger assistant to bring through, maybe someone like Laursen.

I had a look at the odds on Oddschecker earlier. Some interesting names. Bielsa is only 14/1. That'd be nice. Unlikely, but nice!

What are the feelings about Mark Hughes?  Considering QPR's position when he took over, I would be amazed if he hasn't got a clause in his contract that allows him to leave if they are relegated.  I have always really rated Mark Hughes as a manager and I think he'd be a good fit at Villa.  Despite their position, Ithink he has done a pretty good job at QPR and he made some pretty astute signings in January.

Considering the mess we're in, we should be looking to appoint a young-ish up'n'coming manager to bring the kids through rather than someone like AVB or Benitez who would no doubt rely on a large transfer budget. For me the realistic shortlist should look something like...

Rodgers
Di Matteo
Lambert

...Rodgers would be my number one target given the playing style, coaching and current crop of players at the club. If Swansea had a goalscorer like Bent in the team they would comfortably be in the top half given the chances they create and waste, and if anyone can get the best out of our experienced and young players then my money would be on Rodgers.

In recent interviews he hasnt committed his future to Swansea so I'm sure he could be tempted away if we manage to stay up this season.

Rodgers style of play definitely seems to be more attractive than Lambert's.

Crucially, it's effective too.  His team keeps the ball better ergo they have less defending to do - hence then have a better goals against record than Norwich.  They (Swansea) did have a problem putting their chances away earlier in the season. But the hope would be if Rodgers (or similar) came here and sets the team up to attack, a forward like Bent would gobble up those chances.

Rodgers spent a long stint at Chelsea too under Mourinho, and still has the inside track on some of their younger players who -whilst they might not quite be good enough for a top 4 side- could possibly  be good enough for us.

The problem is he's already been linked with the likes of Tottingham and even Man Citeh.  Would be natural enough if that was to go to his head somewhat and alter his thinking. Even if nothing comes of those links, he might feel that the Villa job doesn't quite represent the step up required to leave a job he loves doing, a board he trusts and a club where the fans love him.

First call should be to AVB.
After that take your pick from Poyet, Adkins, Lambert, Flores, Rodgers, AN Other (from abroad), Bernitez, etc.

AN Other sounds good,
i remember good times on here when we signed a player called No One,
in fact MON tended to sign the same player every window, we never saw him play but he was still on 46k a week

Signed at the same time as Jack Shit wasn't he?

Well that's something they need to look at then. Cost cutting if it potentially causes relegation is insane.

I find it outrageous that anyone could think that AVB would be a good choice... all we really know about him is that he turned Chelsea into powderpuff, mid table side- what actually are his strengths??

In the light of Chelsea's immediate upturn since his departure, his effect on the club seems rather 'McLeish-ish'.

However, if Chelsea do go and make another high profile appointment in the summer, a la Guardiola, that might leave Di Matteo looking for a job...

It's hardly outrageous. We also know that he became the youngest manager ever to win a European trophy, and managed only the second team every to win a Portuguese League Championship unbeaten.

The Chelsea job didn't go well for him, but I wonder how much of that was down to the senior 'pros' there, in a similar situation to Houllier here last season, resenting the fact he was trying to change the culture.

I would guess they have markets for all clubs' next managers. I would also guess that the usual suspects are mentioned on them all.

Agreed. His time there strikes me as a bit of a Clough-at-Leeds thing. AVB fell out with Mourinho a couple of years ago, like Clough and Revie, and many of those senior pros, who still consider themselves Jose's guys, would not have taken kindly to this young upstart trying to change everything. In the end, it wasn't to last. But like Clough, AVB will come back somewhere and be a great manager.

Lambert is realistic and has done just about enough to prove that he deserves a bigger job than Norwich.

Quote from: Paul Lambert said:
"...it is extremely unfair with me being linked with Aston Villa when they have got a really good manager up there who is doing everything he can to stay in the league.

I question his judgement already.

Contradicts itself that sentence  , very good manager and trying to stay in the league .
