Hmmm.... if potential candidates thought it was a difficult job 12 months ago, it's doubly difficult now. If a new manager comes in this summer, he'll be walking into a massive task - disinterested senior pros who need moving on, some potentially key players with rock-bottom confidence issues (Gabby, N'Zogbia), and a clutch of promising younger players, who hopefully won't be completely battered or scarred by the experiences of the second half of the season.

Whoever comes in and i hope someone does they will have a nearly blank canvas to start with as there will be a lot offloaded or moved on. It will be a massive year for us we will be starting with a good nucleous of promising talent and new signings. Whoever it is will have a big job just to get us in a positive mood again and lift MONs curse from the ground.

i would be having a word with martin laursen about becoming number 2 to an older manager for 2 seasons and 2 seasons only either.
Gregory
Little
BFR

after the 2 years laursen steps up to the manager role and takes kmac as his number 2 also offering coaching roles to petrov once hes over his illness and mellberg we can start building a villa through and through mentality keeping sid and trying to pursuade learner to appoint a new "villacentric" CEO who actually has a clue how to run a major football club.

if my plan was followed i think in 5 years time we would have started to build a "we are ASTON VILLA and f*** anybody else" mentality that we sorely lack. laursen could not be worse than attackless mcleish and even gregory could be counted on to steer us to mid table or at least avoiding the drop, even if people are worried by the idea with a slightly out of touch gregory taking over for 2 season we could appoint a dof to oversee transfers. i firmly belive martin laursen will manage a villa side one day soon having started managing Søllerød-Vedbæk.

maybe its wishfull thinking but i really enjoyed gregorys villa and would love to see an ex villa player come in as number 2 for a few seasons and start to build the club from within

I threw the name of Paolo Di Caneo in a few pages back, nobody bit. Young, up and coming manager, good season at Swindon on a shoestring, passionate, knows the game from the top and a proper sportsman. I reckon he'd be worth a gamble, but I admit it'd be a gamble! (Then, who isn't? Please do not go down the Hodgson route, no thanks!)

It could be a bit like 1994/95. A narrow escape followed by a clear out, a new start with some new signings.....Our next move (hopefully a new manager) could be the making of us!!

Why not? Safe pair of hands. Experienced. Knowledgeable. Will steady the ship, just what we need for a couple of seasons.

Why bother speculating.  We have a manager in place.  If and when he goes then it's then a case of of who is available and who will take on the job.

None of our 'who do you want' threads will have any influence.

Would be better than what we have for sure.

But that UEFA cup run apart, his spell at Fulham wasn't hugely impressive.  And despite a full pre season there, the Olbiyun have been towards the arse end of the table for most of the campaign.

His sides are generally organised and defend as a unit, but after a season of Big Eck it would be nice to look at a manager who focusses more on setting his own team up to attack, rather than stopping the opposition.  Though I'll readily concede Hodgson is far more effective with his preferred method than McLeish.

I’d take Hodgson, a decent manager whose teams play good football and can spot a decent player and like maidstonevillain says, he will steady the ship for a couple of season.

He is also coming to an age where he might like a DOF role in a couple of years and we could bring in a young manager to work with him.

Paul Lambert for me - has done an excellent job at Norwich and at Colchester and Wycombe before that

get's the best out of his teams

Also got the playing background (Champions League winner) to earn the respect of the players.   Hodgson might be a decent shout as well.  He has quite a lot of experience in Scandanavia so could bring Martin Laursen on board with the view of him taking the job in the future.

Got this from Vital Villa.  Apparently two bookies are taking the odds for the next Villa manager.

Here's the Top 10 candidates according to Victor Chandler and Stan James -

Victor Chandler -

Benitez - 8/1
Curbishley - 10/1
MacDonald - 12/1
Solksjaer - 12/1
Martinez - 12/1
Bruce - 12/1
Moyes - 14/1
McCarthy - 14/1
Lambert - 14/1
Rodgers - 16/1

Stan James -

Benitez - 3/1
Curbishley - 6/1
Bruce - 8/1
MacDonald - 10/1
Solksjaer - 10/1
Martinez - 10/1
Moyes - 10/1
McCarthy - 12/1
Lambert - 12/1
Keane - 12/1

I'm sure we all know that but it's a bit of fun, rather like the Transfer thread.  It's the hope that keep me going.

Those quotes from Victor Chandler and Stan James are names and lists plucked from thin air to try and get the gullible to bite. Nothing in that whatsoever I'm afraid - as long as Lerner isn't struck by some bright light on the road to footballing Damascus, we're stuck with him.

Dean Saunders. Yes I know he's just been relegated with Doncaster, but maybe he has cut his teeth now with them and Wrexham. I've never been one for demanding that the manager has to have Villa links, but i feel we need somebody who knows the place and can get a feel good factor going again.

If anything, at least it's a good song!

I know - but I've just got back from a long liquid lunch, which has made me rather more bitter about what is going on.
