Gus Poyet or if Chelsea don't keep him on as manager Roberto Di Mateo.

Paul Lambert for me, but here's a thought from left field, Paolo Di Caneo. What a job he's done at Swindon on a shoestring and they absolutely love him for his passion, commitment and all round decency. After McLeech we need some of that, no, a LOT of that!

How about adding a poll? just for fun!

I refuse to speculate. Its seems to me that 98% of the names mentioned on the managerial merry go round can swing from being a tactical genius to a clueless fool and back again within a few weeks based on results achieved during a few hours of activity.
What other industry has such a fickle and quickly shifting view of the candidates suited for senior managerial positions in mutli-million pound companies ?

We have to go foreign. I have no idea why Lerner will only consider managers who have "Premier League experience". Its such a small pool of managers, with very little quality between them. The merry-go-round of British managers is one we have to get out of and sharpish.

You just have to look at our targets in the summer. As far as we are aware, we considered four managers: Benitez, Martinez, McLeish and McClaren. What a desperately terrible list of managers. Foreign managers like Quique Flores weren't even given a look in.

Hire a foreign, attacking manager that can dip into foreign transfer markets and help bring the youth at the club through and in two to three years time we could be back challenging for Europe.

My somewhat hopeful prediction is that Wigan get relegated and Martinez swiftly comes down to B6.

Who right now is in 16th place.

With QPR.

With richer owners and probably a bigger wage budget than us.

in fairness, he's had less than half a season there.

Hughes made sense last summer, but that ship has sailed.

I wasn't against the idea of Martinez as much as some were either.   In his short managerial career he has set the template by which Swansea now play, and keeping Wigwam up with their budget probably constitutes exceeding expectations.

The speed at which he got a workmanlike, functional side containing Steve Bruce's cloggers to actually play football was impressive too.  One decent pre season, not 2/3 years.

Their defensive frailties scare me though, and by the same token, he's had 3 years to improve that.  Yet they still have the likes of Caldwell at the back.  Resources play a part, of course.  But part of his job description there is to work within his budget, to spot good players for minimal fees.  Didn't he also spend £9 million on a forward who was little short of a disaster?     That would be big money for us.  It's absolutely huge for a club like Wigan.

I would have loved Hodgson, but our luck being what it is we missed him by a couple of months. Martinez is my realistic option.

Martinez would do if we're not being at all ambitous. Anyone other than McCarthy, Bruce, Pulis or Curbishley.

Brendon Rogers, Paul Lambert, Malky McKay, or even Ian Holloway.

Holloway? I'd rather keep McLeish.
