How about a bit of PROVEN PREMIERSHIP QUALITY to get us out of the crap we're in !!

Unknown/unproven lower league no-marks are one hell of a gamble.

Ye gods.

How about trusting the manager and the methods that have brought him successive promotions and a good first season in the PL?

It strikes me that it would be almost wilfully stupid to appoint Lambert based on his success with Norwich and then say to him, "look Paul, we know how you've done it in the past but we want you to forget all that now".

That'll be the one league win in 18 games crap as last years nightmare continues.

Oh and a quick look at Spurs and 'Pools squads suggests we may struggle to maintain the one point behind margin :(

So last years "nightmare" is continuing then?

You obviously don't want to but I'm going to give the manager a bit of time before I decide he's as bad as Mcleish.

So called Proven Premiership Quality has got us to where we are now. It's time to do things differently. There are only three teams that buy true proven premiership quality players and they all have far more money than us and Champions League football to offer.

Exactly, we had a back 5 of Given, Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock; midfield containing Ireland, Stan, and Nzog; and an attack of Bent and Gabby for large parts last season. Didn't stop relegation form then. Hazzard, Aguerro, Cabaye, Tiote did not have proven premiership quality and neither did most of Swansea and Norwich squads.

It's a silly thing to say IMO.

I may be wrong but I think both N'Zogbia and Ireland have won player of the season awards at Premier League clubs.  Both have received lots of praise from fans and the media and all that jazz.  Does that make them PROVEN PREMIERSHIP QUALITY?  Are these the sorts of signings we should be repeating?

Ash Young wasn't PROVEN PREMIERSHIP QUALITY and he was an OK signing for us, I thought.  The best buys IMO are ones where the player views it as a step up and really wants to impress.

Oh, come on, much as I agree there's a place for players from outside the PL, and without PL experience, there's a bit of a difference between signing lower league players and signing the likes of Eden Hazzard and Aguero.

The way I see it, I'm happy with us signing young players with potential. But I think at the moment we need some high level quality in the squad as well, even if it's just a couple of players.

Must give Lambert plenty of time to get it right. As for the latest signing, he's young, England U21 international and has signed permanently on a 4 year deal. Sounds like a good deal to me. More the concern would be if he's really good and wants to move to the top four in two years time again, but i guess that's the shite nature of football these days. And Lambert still has plenty to do, lets hope Dave's suggestion of 3 more likely signings happens.

It's not about Premier League experience, it's about high level experience.

From AVillafan.com

"I am being told that Villa have completed the signing of Chesterfield striker Jordan Bowery.

Just waiting on confirmation but BBC journalists believe it is a done deal after he passed a medical today."

People have to be realistic. These signings are at best palatable as our squad is so thin. Spurs and Sunderland have just paid £15m for players so seeing us pay small fees for unknowns is a bit underwhelming. You pay peanuts you get monkeys.

It is actually more of a gamble as for most clubs, transfers that high could be the one big signing so if they don't come off, the club could be screwed. See Veron or Aquilani. And you also missed out the lower players of Cabaye and Tiote.

Probably about 10 pages back, I think as the Bennett deal has been announced it has overwhelmed the news.
