Downing would probably cost us a lot less than Johnson given they owe us a lot still from when he went there I understand.  I'd take him, he'd offer far more consistency than Ireland, N'Zog and Bannan imo.

The biggest no possible to Charlie Adam. Just totally the wrong player. As for Downing, I just don't think he'd fit Lambert's vision for the club.

To be honest, I'd be surprised to see us sign anyone from the Premier League, as you just don't get good deals here. Like it or not, that's where we are right now.

Herd is not lacking quality in  my opinion.  good player, great tackler
Agreed. He's got plenty of energy and likes to get about. We need a bit more of that.

Can't say I'd want any of the Liverpool rejects. I hope this deal with the Belgium chap progresses.

It is obvious that Warnock is not going to feature so a LB must be on the cards

Midfield - i think we have some decent players in our squad but need to get the shape and mix right as well as add maybe 1 or 2. I think KEH is a definate starter and would like to see Herd as the holding MF as he was totally wasted on the wing on Sat

NZogbia has done nothing to warrant a place so Ireland would be the door opener for me as he is a gifted player with vision, I would like to see either a new Striker or Weinmann played just behind Bent as his movement is very good

I have always like NZonzi - big presence and a good touch for a big guy

Downing - gutless wanker

Adam - too slow and is a fatter verion of Bannon - all hollywood balls and fuck all else

Any talk of NRC is futile - if he was not good enough 2 years ago how has he got better?

Adam's lack of mobility would be counter productive to the style Lambert wants to play.

He hasn't got better, we've got worse. Not that I think PL is remotely interested in signing him.

I think the argument is we have got significantly worse, not that NRC is any better as a player.  We have no Petrov, Makoun or Gardner in there for various reasons and Delph hasn't stepped up as we would have hoped, leaving us with just KEA and Herd as genuine options.  I think we can do better, but I can understand the argument that there is more need for him now than say 2 years ago.

Likewise Downing, don't like the guy but N'Zogbia and Ireland were pretty disappointing last yr in replacing him and A Young, so I'd swap N'Zog for Downing in a hearbeat now.

What they mean pushed out the squad? As in they not playing ever again..Warnock, Hutton type thing?

No substance to this at all, just thought I'd throw it in as absolute rubbish. If we're after a tricky winger then I'd have a look at Valentin Eysseric, young, tricky and good delivery. Naturally Paul Lambert reads this thread for tips so I expect to see movement in the next 2 days.

I was assuming it meant being replaced in the 25 man squad by a new signing - being pushed down to 26th/27th man.

They want Sturridge from Chelsea apparently, just signed Sahin (?), promoted Sterling, plus their other new signings so I guess they need to trim the squad down a bit.  If Downing had the balls to come back I'd give him a second chance, not sure others would though.

N'Zonzi does play similar to how Viera used to play. I'll never forget his goal against us in the Carling Cup semi. He will add to the squad and is another option to use. I still wonder if we are looking at a creative maestro in midfield who pulls the strings. We have Ireland but I'm not totally sold on him as he hasn't properly proven himself.
