I'd rather just go with what we've got if the alternative was to sign plodders such as Doyle, Reo-Coker and Maloney.

The alternative could be a relegation dogfight if we don't get in some extra bodies with proven experience. Because we have sooooo much quality in our squad these days we can totally be snobby about players such ad NRC, Dawson and Doyle.
I'm not being snobby at all, they're just not very good players.

I still can't help shake off the feeling that Lambert is trying to bring in players he had in mind at Norwich when he was planning his summer spending there last season. A host of promising but completely untried lower league players is not what we really need right now. We already have a team worth of youth prospects of whom none of us are sure will make the grade or not.

I don't know how much inside information Pelty is privy to but his comment the other day along the lines of "the money is there for big signings provided the wages aren't crazy. These are the players Lambert wants to go for" just worries me a little. A mix of long-term planning is fine only if allied to short-term action given our current predicament.

Wait. How is Lukaku going to West Brom a kick in the balls? Villa are not a feeder club to anybody, especially not the likes of Chelsea. Why should we give a young striker game time and invest so much into his development when he is going back to his parent club?

Cresswell and one or two others will do me.

I'd agree with that.

What's going to help is is getting decent players in, better than the ones we have.

I don't get this NRC nostalgia. It's as if people hadn't noticed over the four years what a limited player he was. There's a reason he's training on his own and without a club - he's shit.

The same goes for Heskey.

It's a kick in the balls because for the mean time he is exactly what we need a bit like Kyle Walker was when we got 6 months out of him which some could argue played a very large part in keeping us up in the 10/11 campaign..! It's alright looking at the long term by signing players like Lowton and Vlaar who may take time to adapt, but we also need players that will make an immediate impact, Lukaku has already done that with the Tesco carrier bags

Surely nobody has suggested we should get Heskey back, though, have they? Really?

I don't think even Emile could suggest that himself and keep a straight face.

So Stephens, Benteke, Dawson, Owen and Joe Bennett all linked on twitter tonight.

Benteke looks a hell of a prospect, but need a winger or man to commit and create to get the ball to him. Tom Ince might be a good call. Lets hope he is on the radar too.

I've preferred Ince over Phillips since the playoffs and it looks like he's starting to mature now. However, Lambert has been very clear about not playing with wingers and instead having 4 central midfielders - 2 defensive and 2 behind the strikers. So he would need to change to a more central role and it would be difficult to adjust to both Premier League football AND a different position.

In which case Phillips may be better suited as he played central a lot the year Blackpool were up. I am just concerned that Nzogbia is struggling to resemble a sunday league player after a night on the lash, and we have zero idea of how to create. Ireland plays pretty balls with no effect, we need someone who will go past a defender and get the ball across the goal or get in behind the full back, with pace and a trick.

The Benteke story is gathering pace now with a couple of papers claiming we've made a bid of £5.5m.

Seems quite a few of the news desks are reporting the benteke story now...not that that in itself means anything

Not in itself, very true, but Kendrick and the Brum Mail are quite reliable these days.

I hope so, could be a good bit of business if it comes off...just hope we don't get pipped by the other clubs being linked.

I'd suspect it's the perfect signing that we'd make: good enough to play for us, not yet good enough for the bigger clubs to make a bid, too young for Genk to demand too much money and the player type we need into the bargain. Perfect I'd say.

The armchair managers have come out I see...

And if I hear the phrase "premier league experience" again, I don't even...
