I think a different approach is needed with our kids. Perhaps we need to loan more of them out at a younger age, and then scout them the same way as we would new signings. I know we don't put a lot of store in whatever TSM says, but according to someone I know who has spoken to him, we are too interested in winning trophies at reserve and youth level to let them go and develop in more competitive football.

Totally agree. Clark looks like he needs a full season at centre back on loan before being first choice in the prem at the moment. Baker looks stronger for playing out on loan last season too. I think we need to get them out, into competitive football with an assurance they are going to play more often than not.

Been saying this for a few years now.  I think as well as being taken in by MON, Randy has been "misled" by other members of the coaching staff as to how good these young players are.  By keeping them at VP and winning cups against other teams who have sent their better young players out on loan has given a false impression of how good ours actually are.  How many have actually come through and secured a regular first team place?  They should have been sent out, for decent periods not the odd one month here and there, and that would have allowed them to show they were good enough, if they in fact were.

Hornets nest of "NOOOOOO" on the Maloney thing then. Fair enough. His name will never pass my fingers again. I thought he showed promise in the games i saw him in when i was still at home.

I don't particularly want Maloney back, but he's miles better than alot of we've got to offer currently.

It is possible for players to improve. Besides, Maloney wasn't bad when he was here before, just lazy and inconsistent.

Yep. I thought he had the potential to do very well at our club.

So why didn't he?

When he was actually at the club?

Flair player playing for MON. Never got a proper chance because he was never going to displace Young.

Maybe he lacked drive to make it happen for his obvious technical qualities, but he wasn't the only one who got disillusioned with O'Neill's squad selection only to leave and do well.

Somebody on this forum must have a list of available players that we could possibly be in for. We don't know how much money we have to spend, if any, but can somebody give us a clue who would be assets to our team. I don't see many european names being thrown in the hat. Clue, anybody, or are we in for just " journeymen and has been's ?"

O'Neill generally played the same 11 into the ground every week. And in the counter-attacking, set-piece dominant style of Woody Allen's nephew I don't think Maloney's tricky technique really fitted in. He's been really good for Wigan since the turn of the year. Martinez's style suits him but I think he's best left there. We really need players that are proven performers for longer than half a season at the moment.

Maloney was clearly lost being that far from Scotland, he always looked like he was on the verge of tears, like a small, friendless kid from a different area, experiencing his first day at senior school.

disagree. The amount of injuries we've had for the third season running has put paid to the amount of loan dealings we could have had, or would have possibly liked to have had. The kids have gone nowhere because they have been needed.

however, in saying that of those still here those that have been loaned out are:

Bannan
Herd
Lichaj
Baker
delfouneso
(Albrighton?)
Gardner

Hogg and Lowry also were loaned and then sold.

Not too many more we could have loaned out.

The problem with the loaned players listed above is that they often only go for a month or two.  They should be given full season loans as they’re likely to be fully integrated into the new team.  Think of Cahill at Burnley as a good example.

I'd rather just go with what we've got if the alternative was to sign plodders such as Doyle, Reo-Coker and Maloney.

The alternative could be a relegation dogfight if we don't get in some extra bodies with proven experience. Because we have sooooo much quality in our squad these days we can totally be snobby about players such ad NRC, Dawson and Doyle.

Ideally we would have a strong first team squad and our youth products would be of such a standard that the mid-lower Premier League clubs wanted them on season long loans and would give them first team football. We certainly don't have the first and the second is debatable. The one's that teams would probably want on that basis are of such an age that if they're not good enough now they need to be sold.
