So, Delfouneso is injured anyway then?  We really are very sort of options up front.

Aston Villa FC

Chris Herd has resumed training, while Nathan Delfouneso is described as "touch and go" with a thigh strain.

Whenever I see the phrase 'touch and go' I always think of Millie Clode for some reason.

Re Delfouneso and his performances to date, I am not so sure it is a case of a good or bad player playing in a bad side. More a case of whether ehatever skills he has suit the team's pattern of play.

McLeish's tactics relied upon a frontman who was going to get a head on hoofed clearances, and then lurk about at the far post waiting for crosses bombed in from out wide (which by and large never materialised). If Bent struggled to shine  with such a neanderthal approach, it's a bit much to expect Delfouneso to have fared any better.

From what I have seen of Defouneso so far he is far happier dropping the slightly deeper of the two strikers, receiving the ball to feet  and either turning and running at defenders or playing the ball on to a colleague.

In the team or out of it, he has had virtually no chance to show how good or indifferent he is at doing just that, but I can believe in a Lambert team there is a reasonable chance he will succeed. To me he's worth persevering with.

Looks like with these preseason injuries we will be skate-ing on thin ice up front

Jones has really good athletic ability for a striker, he's good in the air too. Did he play much with Bent at Sunderland? Can't remember if they were a striker partnership or not...

I can't say for sure but I think having Jones might be more beneficial to the team than Defoe (who is still a good player).

Think its been mentioned a few times on this thread that bent is on ecord saying he's the best partner he's ever had. Poachers tend to like big men who win a lot of balls and jones has a leap like an NBA player so you can see why he'd like him.

Edit:  Haven't seen why we're doing fish puns but let's say he rises like a salmon instead.

I would touch and stay with Millie.

2-3 more signings and we could have a kraken squad.

A bit of muscle up front, and hope we don't clam up at home.
