I just wouldn't really see the point. If there's one position we don't need to improve on, it's a poaching, line-leading, channel-running centre-forward.

I agree. We have one of the best in the business already employed in Bent.

I don't think we're in for a striker.

I can't believe Lambert doesn't think we need a striker. 2 Senior guys, one of whom is increasingly injured and a couple of kids? Nah.
Why the interest in Carroll and Luuk de Jong (that we know of) then?

I think we are as I'm convinced Lambert is looking, but it won't be for a Bent clone, it will be for someone who can play with him.  I also think he won't buy a striker for the sake of it.  If the right type of player is available for the money we'll go for them, if not I don't think he'll buy (or loan) someone just to make up numbers.  I expect a left back and I have a feeling he mght be looking for a midfielder once the Makoun  loan is finalised, after that I think it will be getting the right players if they're available, be that now, in jan or next summer even.

We need a striker as we have one decent one and the others are average at best

ok ignoring the bit about our intrest in de jong and caarroll for 1 min i have a serious question for you.

How did andy carroll get good?? because newcastle stuck with him and played him also playing to his strengths. they didnt bury him behind yet another over paid under performing player which allowed him to develope into a good striker. now in my opinion the fonz is dead in the water and has to be moved on at some point as he is now holding up players from the next generation but weimann has got a good look about him and i think he can play so why not have him as 3rd choice? let him turn into a villa star or a nice big pay day when he moves on.

Plus i belive we will only play 1 up top most of the time anyway, well 1 striker the other player will play the second striker role/attacking midfielder like ireland behind bent or n'zog behind bent or holman behind bent. i also think we wont see bent out for 3 months this season and gabby will score goals and when you consider further that the departing player that everyone is clamouring to be replaced was heskey! mr 1 in 10 im sure we will manage without his 3 goals a season this year and more than likeluy robbie keane will be back come January.

back to the de jong link some deals are to good to pass up on full stop and de jong was one of those deals as for andy carroll we had nothing to loose a loan with an option to buy if he did well we win if he did crap we dont loose. also at 22/23 even if we had brought him after the loan for 12 million chances are in 3 years of doing well he'd be worth double that again.

so i think we are looking for a left back but after that only REAL value will be brought and im all for that. i'd rather buy a milner/bent/young/laursen once every year or 2 that 13 players like heskey/harwood/beye/sutton/sidwel every summer

Maybe he's only interested in the right striker.  If nobody is available in our price range maybe it would be better to wait

He'd be perfect with Bent ....

Most (if not all) of us have pretty much given up on Fonz doing anything because he hasn't done anything in the last couple of years. However he does seem to have been quite involved in pre-season and maybe Lambert sees something in him? Its also worth considering that Lambert has got us playing a more possession based style of play that could suit him. At any rate, I think Lambert wants to give as many of the squad a fair chance as he possibly can - at least in his first season. He was even giving Warnock a chance until he played a shocker in the Forest game and proved himself to be a liability that will need replacing.

I still think, maybe/ probably a bit wrongly, that we will spend some decent money on a player this summer. A young left back, probably Cresswell or Bennett and then a big signing. I just don't think Lambert would have come without some assurance that he could change the squad about, and the restriction is wages, but there is still a big deal to be done somewhere. Carroll would be my bet, he is his type of player, but we will see.

Carroll wouldnt come to villa so we can rule him out . His agent and sources close to him have made it clear he would only consider clubs playing in european football .

This sell to buy bollocks is pissing me off. How many seasons of this do we have to sit through? You know what I would like? People to think Aston Villa was planning on challenging for Europe not what we are doing now which is obviously aiming to try and cling in the league as cheaply as possible.

Delfouneso is 21 and people are giving up on him already?

He's never been given a consistent run of games to show what he can do. Just because he "hasnt done it" we should not be impatient and neglect his talent. I think he just lacks the confidence at times knowing hes not going to be a regular starter. He's still got plenty of time to develop into the player we've hoped for.

For the record, I haven't given up on either Fonz or Weimann and still have high hopes for both. But it's a long old season and I'd be happier with another striker in. Especially if he offers something our others lack.
