Now Milner was a very good player for us and I enjoyed his time here, but if he goes somewhere else so be it. He's good, but he's not that good and I'm sure there are other players available who can improve us greatly.

I struggle to think of another (borderline) realistic signing we could make who would improve us more than getting Milner back.

But I'm not sure he's even borderline realistic given the wages he must be on at Citeh. I'd rather we follow the approach we have so far this summer and look for value abroad.

Danny Rose WILL NOT be joining us.

I have it on good authority that he'll be joining Coventry on loan.

Every Rose has it's Thorn.

but I'm not so sure about todays story of 13 million for Fletcher.
Not a chance of us signing a player for that amount.

The Villa teamtalk page on teletext says that we are making an audacious move to bring Christian Vieri to Villa Park.
New Manager John Gregory is thought to want to create a dream team strike partnership of Vieri and Ariel Ortega.

If we could get someone like Juminho to play behind them that might be a top combination!

Talk is Gareth Farrelly is regretting leaving and is being lined up for a shock return.
We need Franz Carr for the wing, Gary Parker in the middle to pull the strings. Alan Wright at left back. Shaun Teale at centre back and Darren Byfield up front. top 4... easy.

Toronto, as I stressed in my post it's my opinion. I don't think there's enough hard evidence from a few warm up games to make claims that we're a top 8 side. We've signed pretty much unknown quantities so far who will need to make the adjustment to the unique demands of PL football and that usually takes time.

Of course they might surprise us and click straight away but logic suggests that it will take longer for them to settle in. Similarly existing players are going to have to adjust to the new manager and how he wants us to play as well as getting used to the new signings. I'd say a solid mid table finish is the most likely outcome.

Chris, in what was a disaster of a season after MON bolted we still finished 9th. Irrespective of how ended up there, we still did. If this has proved anything for the mid table positions you don't have to have everything going for you to finish in the lower European spots. With solid management, and a squad with more belief and desire we should be challenging Everton or Fulham. I'd be disappointed if we weren't. McLeish made a mockery of us last season. I truly don't think we are as bad as made us look.

If we still had Young and Downing and were likely to spend £18m on a striker in January I'd share your optimism, Toronto, as it is O'Neill's first season is a better comparator (imo).

Anyway I hope you're right and I'm wrong, I could do with that sort of lift at the moment.

I like the idea of playing three central defenders, Shaun Teale, Allan Evans and Concrete Ron. With maybe Kent Neilson and George Curtis as squad players to cover for suspensions.

Does anyone here listen to Talksport? Is it true that they're reporting that Milner will sign for Martinoneillssunderland on Friday?

I doubt very much that Sunderland would match his Man City wages so therefore he would need to take a cut. If the transfer fee isn't silly I see no reason why we should not go in for Milner. He played well for us in both of his spells here and has a lot of affection to the club. If we were serious in getting him I'm confident that he would choose us over Sunderland. Milner is very much a 'safe signing' in my eyes, we know what we are getting with him and I could see him and El Ahmedi as the holding players in our midfield. This would allow Ireland or N'Zogbia to play off Bent or Agbonlahor. A much better option than spunking out £12m on Stephen Fletcher who, may be ok for Wolves, but not us.

I would love to see milner back here, i dont think it will happen but if its true that sunderland are expecting to sign him by friday then i would hope we at least make enquiries to see if we could tempt him back- extreme long shot but still worth a try.

People are forgetting Milner is from the North East.
He wouldn't need a pay cut Shitty would pay some of his wages.Thinking it might happen.

Milner is not from the north east, hes a leeds lad , yes he played for newcastle after leeds but was born and raised 75 miles away from tyneside.

Whether mackem fans would take to an ex toon player is another question, whereas he had a great rapport with villa fans and always  gave 100%.

I think it's an excellent name. I'd even consider buying a shirt with his name on if we signed him.
