Given the Gabby injury and the possible need to get a new striker in, balanced against the risk of giving a long contract to someone who might be seen as "cover", wouldn't it make sense to look at getting John Guidetti in on loan, if (if) he's available?

If we could get a decent striker in on loan would probably be the best option all round.

A season long loan would save us money on buying a striker and would provide the cover we need in the squad whilst we develop Weimann and Delfouneso into regular playing EPL strikers and also give us time to see how Gabby does this season. I was thinking maybe we could bring in an elder established striker on a short term contract but a loan deal would be a better deal as long as they are proven at getting goals.

Step forward Lukaku

For the right price I'd look at Fletcher at Wolves (£7m max) or Rhodes at Hunndersfield (£4m max)

Rhodes is in talks with Blackburn, Blackburn are paying £6m

If the former then we'd be limiting Clark's chances and if the latter it would be pretty pointless considering our own young CBs already at the club.  So, do we want to see Clark go the way of The Bolton Defender due to lack of opportunity?  I don't, so would be happy with the alternative of keeping Dunne for another year as the experienced reserve while we find out exactly how good he and Baker are.

Yep. The way it stands, I think we should be looking to with Vlaar and Clark at CB, with Baker first reserve (while Dunne is injured). Hopefully no complications with the Dunne injury, and he's back within a couple of months as cover. Until then, we could be fine with a combination of Lichaj/Lowton/Herd providing further cover.

Failing that, I could see a six-month loan deal for a CB, just to be safe, until Dunne is fit.

Actually, two loan deals - one a CB, one a striker - wouldn't be the worst idea; the striker gives us support while Gabby is out and while Lambert makes a decision on ND and AW.

Look at all the tactical ideas we are seeing floated....compare that with last year's park the bus and don't go past the halfway line if at all possible....what a refreshing change!!

I like this Douglas Teixeira cat. I think he'd plug in nicely at the Villa, however I'd hate to see Clark get a more limited roll because of it. We certainly need CB coverage though with Dunney out for an extended period.

As for the strikers I think Weimann and even Danny could hold down the fort while Gabby's unfit. Our midfield will be flying come the West Ham opener and goals will be coming from all sorts of players.

We have to sign him.  Our centre-halves would be Ron and Doug.  Immense.

We absolutely need another striker and I think its certain we'll get one.

Firstly because unfortunately our first choice two are having regular injury problems and though I'm a fan of Weimann and Fonz, we can't and shouldn't rely on them.

Secondly because we lack another type of forward who can either provide power or creativity. Or preferably both.
Yes we can play one out and out striker and advance one of Ireland, Holman or N'Zogbia up the field and if thats what we have to do, so be it.
But it will take a lot of pressure off having another option up front.

All for Lukaku but only if we can arrange a permanent deal at some point. Likewise Sturridge and Guidetti.

Isn't MON prepared to pay upwards of £12 million for Fletcher? (No  surprise there)

Of course we are all in the dark when it comes to these matters, but all this speculation surrounding the signing of another CB could mean that Lambert is not convinced by what he has seen of the current players in that position.

I'd say handing Clark the #6 shirt is a pretty good sign that he's convinced by his ability

Although I agree that Clark will have a big part to play under Lambert, when you think he also gave Hutton no2, I don't think that's the best indicator!

EDIT: OK, who put the word filter on for B E R T I E?? >:(
