I'd say that up until a certain age being older should add to your value as you're nearer the finished article and less of a prospect.  And depreciation due to length of contract only really comes into play once you hit the last 12 months.

did Fletcher really score 17 league goals last season in a struggling team ?
cant say i've took much notice of him but if he did score 17 thats more than gabby has ever scored in any season

I think it was 17 in all competitions and 12 in the league.

Soccernet says

11/12 - 12 goals in Prem, no cup goals
10/11 - 10 goals in Prem, 1 FAC goal and 1 CC goal

Just playing devils advocate about Fletcher, but he's 25 and since moving to Burnley in 2009, when they were a PL club, he's stayed at that level and scored 30 in 96 games, so a 1 in 3 striker.  Give his age, should Wolves not be expecting a profit given that his ratio has further improved to 1 in every 2.8 games for them?

You'd need to subtract the depreciation in his value due to being a year older, I guess, plus a year less on his contract.

And factor in how desperate they are to get his wages off the bill.

gabby gets a cut alot of slack because he is local and come from the youth set up. if gabby had been bought for any money at all after the last 2 seasons worth of performances he would be getting a lot more stick than he does!
he for one in my book needs to pull his frigging finger out! No more excuses!

Definately, 100%, but he does deserve the benefit of the doubt because if he turns himself around we have a 10-15 goal a season player without paying out any money - if he don't then sod sentiment, football is a business at the end the day and a striker who isn't scoring well isn't good business.

Personally, I don't cut Gabby any slack because of where he's come from, but I do give him some benefit of the doubt for the last two seasons as he's had injuries, been played wide, had poor managers and the whole club has been in turmoil on and off the pitch.  The three years prior to that he hit double figures and was improving year on year.  I hope and think those issues are now behind us, so we does need to get back to the player he was under MON from now on.

Sorry, I thought it was 17.
Unless it was 12 league and 5 cup.

Sturridge, even if only on loan, would be the one I'd like to see us go for.

I do, cuz I've got nothing better to do with my life, it was 12 goals in all competitions for both seasons at the Wolves and the 1 at Burnley.

We just need to avoid signings like that. He's a good player, but he's not going to be number 1.

We need to sign players that can either progress with us and be good enough to play at a higher level, or if we can't get them  then get ones that are capable of getting us in the top 6 that won't lose value.

Under MON we did that way too much. Players not capable of getting us into the top 4 on big wages that have lost so much value it prevents us from signing the players that can get us there.

We've got Bent and Gabby who are top 6 strikers on form. Get them both fit and firing and someone like Klasnic (unless we can get someone like Sturridge/Carroll) to provide capable competition at little expense so we're not relying on Weimann.

Then save the striker money for a time when we're in a position of strength.
