Sheff Utd fans (from two forums I checked) seem happy with getting 3m for him. A few reckon he's not good enough for the Prem, some say his attacking and creativity is good (as is his eye for goal) but his defending lets him down. General consensus I'd say is that while he's a good player and did well for them they're thrilled with the price and aren't sure he can step up to our level.

I think Luc Nilis was a brilliant signing at the time.  That goal against Chelsea showed his class but the way he moved in that match, finding space etc. would have been great for the younger players at the time to have worked alongside.

All dashed that afternoon at Portman Road.

Luc Nilis was a brilliant player and his injury was so cruel. He was a world class finisher, who was genuinely a two footed player. We were robbed when he got injured. He was the last true marquee signing.

He was our Bergkamp.
Didn't we nearly sign him too?
He was probably my all time favorite non Villa player.

messed up quote on first attempt  :-[

Mathew Lowton, apparently. Never heard of him.
Not very exciting these signings. We seem to be doing things on the cheap these days.
Yes, I too yearn for a return to the days when we spent stupid amounts of money on exceptionally average footballers.

Something similar was said earlier in the thread.
I'll side with the reply (can't remember who) "Sounds very much like Kyle Walker". Who always dropped a couple of clangers during games, but got away with them because he was quick.

It's nice to see us bring in a few players without breaking the bank. Look like decent punts so far, here's hoping we get Brahmi too. After bringing him in (along with Ahmadi, Lowton, Guzan and Holman), we should still have money for a decent, dare I say, marquee Centre Back.

Oh, and those training pics on the OS, Hutton not on any of them.

Here's hoping ...

what would be more worrying if we suddenly didn't get pictures of Ireland, Bent, N'Zog etc because Hutton has gone through them 3 minutes after the ball has left the scene. Useless fucker.

We have to have faith that the 'lesser' talents Lambert is picking up are unearthed gems rather than the kind that sign for Wolves and Blackburn. Lambert seems like a guy with a whole lot of sense and very much a 'where do they fit into my system' manager rather than someone who buys players just as cover. I'm confident that even though these players are not big names, he's following the correct path.

If nothing else, the last few pages of this thread have reminded me just how much I hate the term 'marquee signing'. It makes whoever says it sound like an utter trumpet.

Kendrick has confirmed that we've signed Lowton. Very efficient by Mr Lambert indeed this summer and well done to Faulkner for backing him as he said he would.

we could have a decent r/b for the first time since probably Gary Charles.
Mark Delaney was better than Gary Charles.

Luke Young was a good RB as well, it was just that he was never played there!!  Can't really comment on Matt Lowton as I haven't seen him play, but I wonder if he has been brought in as a starting RB or is going to be given time to adjust?  It is a big jump up from League One (especially for a full-back as the quality and pace of wingers is way higher in the Premiership) and whereas the likes of Naughton could have gone straight in to the side, I don't know if that will be the case with this lad.  That said, I think finding the odd gem in the lower leagues is a good policy, especially if they are cheap and enable us to supplement their signings with real quality purchases.

That's the key.  Spending £3m on a RB instead of £6m could then be the difference between signing a £12m striker instead of an £8m one.

on the united forums one or two sayin his problem was thathe was always likely to be undone by pace, has anyone thought he may have been signed as backup to Lichaj or Herd at RB......just a thought

'Can't defend and has no pace' sounds more like Hutton than Walker  :)
In a little defence of Hutton, it didn't help him having 2 poor/slow centre backs with him. He seemed to play better with Caarlos.

Have to say with some of the comments on here, i am completely underwhelmed by this signing. If he has no pace, then there is no chance of him being a success in the Prem.

Eric, for me , did nothing wrong towards the end of the season, and was in fact one of our more reliable players in the last few games.Hutton was far better than Warnock or Dunne last season as well, he might not be the best, but hes nowhere near as bad as some people on here seem to think, remember Andy Comyn, and Bernie Gallacher?

People go on about Lichaj, I've not seen the guy have one good game for us at right back, he played well at left back towards the end of last season, are people just assuming because he is right footed he will be better on the right?  This is not always the case, guys like Ginola, Adam Johnson, Ashley Young, are/were all far better playing on their opposite side.  When on loan at Leeds Lichaj also played left back if I remember correctly.  I assume the plan will be to sign a young competent left back and let the 3 of them scrap it out for the 2 spots, but as things stand I would say Lowton right back and Lichaj left back, which is ok by me.
