He was injured for periods of those two seasons and also played wide a lot.

Gabby played his best out wide, but didn't he go like 20 odd games without a goal?

I think Gabby will flourish under Lambert and on Holt, no thanks.

He had a run of 20 or so games up front last season after Bent was injured and did not score. The excuses for him are getting very thin. He has lost a yard of pace and Houllier was right to tell him to stop the weights, his pace made him, now he is just a beefed up forward who is quick. Not lightening any more though and rarely runs past his defender.

yes he did, but that just goes to prove not all players can handle the rough and tumble of the premiership, he was pretty shite for the arse for three years

enough already. Is Grant fucking Holt the only player in the known universe? No. Let's move on and discuss other candidates for Emule's vacant changing room peg. Please!
Oh do please forgive us

I think his problems were largely to do with confidence and attitude. He started off pretty well for them in his first six months/year there.

It hurts me to say this, but I agree.  Time to move him on.

I'd hope that under Lambert we'll be a lot fitter. Fitness was a big problem last season. Houllier had been trying to address it but arguably his regime was a bit too tough and lead to injuries. Seems like everyone had it way too easy under McLeish. Dunne got fat again. Gabby actually looked very chunky too. Not just gym beef but he looked to carrying a good 7-14 pounds too much on him, maybe more.

Gab needs to work hard, re-focus and regain his fitness and more importantly try and regain an extra yard of pace. He can still roast most defenders in the league but an extra yard would be great. He also needs the confidence to take people on again. What frustrated so much was that up until November under McLeish Gabby looked brilliant. After that he looked piss poor. When he's up for it he's probably our best player.

I'm personally not ready to discount a player who's scored over 60 goals for us and who's only 25.
However if Lambert can't get him back to his best then it's definitely time to move on.

Agree on this, To many chances now for Gabby to be the player we all thought should be, If he doesn't do it this season then time to move him on.

Agree, think Lambo is the kind of manager that is not afraid to drop anyone if they aren't performing

I'm not so sure.  That's good money, and I reckon we could get two very good players with that if Lambert was given it to spend.

I love Gabby, but another £20m off them for a player on the slide would be too good to refuse.
