An example of what I'd like to see:
Naughton, Douglas, Bertrand (loan), Moussa Sissoko, Frimpong (loan w/fee agreed), Adam Johnson, Kuscszak and Guidetti (or Rhodes).

Be interesting to see if he gets a sniff at Man City after a great season on loan although I would think he would find himself as 5th choice out of their current strikers. He’s unlikely to want to sit on the bench (at best) so he could be gettable its just whether it would be a permanent or loan move.

Plus they're bound to buy others. We can take chances on youngsters, I'm not sure they will.
It would have to be a permanent deal.

We're not going to sign ten players. I don't know why, summer after summer, people think we might!

Because this is a speculation/wish thread for entertaiment purposes and we can say what we like, even if its unlikely.
Besides, it was 8 players, two of which are loans, replacing probably as many outgoing. It's not impossible.

I'm with you Maz and think it will happen, simply because we have no outstanding players either in form or quality. I would take Holt without hesitation, selling a burnt out Agbonlahor for a good sized fee.  As you also point out we should be going for 2 quality loans like we did with Walker from Spurs. With Holman that would leave room for 4 signings, maybe 3 if Makoun is given another chance.

I think buying Grant Holt twice is an extravagant waste of resources.
Buying him once would be.

I believe it would be a big, big mistake.

Agreed, I'll be a bit gutted if we sign him.
Would you have been gutted had he been our player last season chipping in with 17 goals?
Which, incidentally, was more than our entire strike force.

I truly believe it's a one season wonder, Marlon Harewood did similar at West Ham and look how that turned out for us.

He's consistently scored 1 in 2 or thereabouts so its not like he's a stranger to scoring regularly. Whether he can continue that in the Premier League remains to be seen but who knows.

we shouldn't be buying anyone who does not have the potential for a re-sale fee full stop. FFS even Holt's current club won't give him a new deal. Why? Because he wants one that's a minimum of three years and they say no because he's too old. There must be more cost effective alternatives!

He's after what will be his last major contract so I dont blame him.

Personally I don't rate Herd as a good footballer  ....
Opinions, opinions.
I saw in Herd a very good footballer: his positioining and anticipation is excellent (he covered both FB from time to time from MF last season); his passing is - well- at the very least passable (I remember 3 or 4 raking passes away at Blackburn in the first half that set up good attacking moves); he has goal instincts (goal at Liverpool plus efforts at WBA and ARse); he's got attitude.
Sort of agree, kind of don't at the same time. In midfield he offers little in my opinion, as a full back I would have him any day ahead of Hutton. Great engine, puts his noggin on anything and tackles with a little more composure than Hutton. Lambert will cast his eye over things and see where certain individuals should be playing.

Definately see where your coming from.  Though i think Lichaj is miles better than Herd and Hutton. Herd would be my second choice right back. But he's not a Premiership quality Midfielder. I'd like to see a bit of flair and culture I'm midfield for a change!

I like Herd but agree Lichaj is a better RB than Herd and not quite a first team MF. Not many people talking about Baker, who i think has the makings of a future first team CH. He was excellent against Sunderland and various other games ........

Absolutely. I say best of luck to him - solid, lower league player comes good and wants to get a good bit of money out a game that he has worked hard at for two decades or so.

I hope he gets a great contract out of it and is set for life. I just hope that it's not us that provides it for him.

Holt is a journey man number 9 that has just had his best ever season.  See Harewood, Marlon.

See, also, Withe, Peter !!

we had better start getting those Peter Withe quotes ready because Holt will be coming,

i rememeber when we signed Harewood, i had a massive argument on here with someone who was calling it a' MON master stroke', and he could be the 'new Peter Withe',
the big excuse being used then was he was only 'a back up striker' yeah that was a good one

we wont be able to use that one with Holt,
so we'd better start thinking of some good reasons for having a 31 year old big fella up front with one decent prem season to his name on a 3 year deal

At least I'm excited about the Villa for a change.

I agree

p.s

Your tag line - the comment from TSM - was that from a game against an "elite team" or any of the premiership away games!!

I must change that , it was probably Baggies away ;)

does any one think that by bringing in holt, that might make bent want to leave as he will not be 1st choice stiker.
the team should be built around 1 goal poacher

I just can't see anything other than a media/press fascination with 'Holt to Villa' based purely on the fact that we now have Lambert and absolutely nothing else. We'll see soon enough I suppose.
