Nothing wrong with championship players as long as the team is playing in the right manner, I'm not insinuating that you meant that though oz

To be fair , Norwich were championship players

Is anyone a little concerned with him identifying players before he assess our squad up close?

OK, if they've said to him the left back is going he can say who he'd like to get in for that position, but I'd prefer him to fully understand our strengths and weaknesses before spending the club's money!

No

The Guardian are saying there are 4 or 5 names on the hitlist with Lambert confirming some are at the Euros.

I thougth Villa was injured ;)

I'd be OK with 4, it's when people talk about 6s and 7s I think "Hang on a minute".  If for no other reason than getting that many mith a limited budget may dilute the quality.

I also take Mazrim's point about it being staggered over a month or more and pre-season training comes into it.  But we've often seen that nothing compares to competitive games and players can take time to settle regardless of when during the summer they were signed.

Hopefully none of them are in the Ireland squad, I wouldn't want to sign any of them. That includes Keane, because as good as he was I think we should be looking at younger options.

At least I'm excited about the Villa for a change.

I agree

p.s

Your tag line - the comment from TSM - was that from a game against an "elite team" or any of the premiership away games!!

I think the mcleish quote above was after the arsenal game. And roughly a fortnight before Wigan went to the emirates and won

Really all depends on whom he thinks he should offload from the current squad, but with 2 decent defenders, a back-up keeper, another striker and possibly a central midfielder as the priority I'd agree, although he may also bring in one or two bargain-basement players as a punt.

MF is the most interesting area: he potentially has Ireland, N'Zog, Holman, Makoun available, and Herd, Carruthers, Gardner, Bannan and Albrighton are also in the mix for midfield / wing (and 12 months on from looking a little raw, these latter have all had some EPL experience). So he does have the makings of a very good central unit.

I wouldn't rule out Delph yet either and I think Johnson will start breaking through next season.

I agree. I think Lambert will be rather pleasantly surprised by the talent he has in attack, with the likes of Carruthers there as well. The defence is priorities one, two and three.

If we get the players in relatively soon there's no reason why, with a month or so to aquaint themselves with eachother, a team with lots of new players can't gel and hit the ground running. It's not like they're strangers to the game.

Quite agree.  There are too many excuses made for players these days.  "Needs a full pre-season", "needs a whole season to get used to the Premier League".  We need players to come and hit the ground running, like Cisse did for Newcastle this season.

I'd like us to give the midfield a whole new shake up.  Personally I don't rate Herd as a good footballer.  You can't fault his grafting ability but technically I don't think he's good enough.  I think we need a leader in midfield with Makoun - Milner would have been perfect.

I'd like Naughton in at right back, and a ball playing centre half to play with Dunnie.  I think he's still got one more year in him.  A new left back providing with shift Warnock off the wage book.

And a new striker to play with Bent.  Not forgotting we've got Holmann to potentially play right midfield.

If we had a taker for Ireland, I'd get rid.

I don't rule out Delph, but I'm hoping that he may reincarnate into a marauding LB.
I haven't seen much of Johnson but the signs seem to be good.
