Today's Times has Leon Best and Danny Guthrie linked.....................

These types of signings reek of relegation. Hopefully bollocks.

Again only rumours, but fucking hell that's depressing. As I've said if Mcleish stays we are buggered.

Guthrie is a decent player for nothing. A squad bod.
I wouldn't be horrified with getting him in if it is short of inspiring.
But its all about who is buying him. I dont want this manager spending anything and would rather the new manager (who had better be coming) had it all from scratch.

Leon Best is quite reasonable, but really don't think much of Guthrie.

Once we were always linked with Spurs casts offs, now it's Newcastle's.

I'm guessing that Best would be seen as a Happy Shopper replacement for Bent due to our Osborne style austerity measures.

If he is staying, and it's looking increasingly likely after what i've heard, then McLeish will make other signings that make Karl Henry and Leon Best look like Barcelona players.

Best and Henry would cost the mooted £3m-ish that McLeish spoke about, after that it would be Bosmans ahoy.

We are going to be solid brown shit if he stays next season. Bent must be getting his agent to get him out as we speak. Best and Henry. Jesus wept. Not even imaginative. Lambert got pilkington at Norwich for 2 million last summer and he is way better than Henry. The blueprint has to be young, that can turn a profit. Good scouting. Not buy shit players with no thought.

Can't see Lerner being so daft to keep on McLeish. It would be suicide. Na, he's a gonner.

I think they're both reasonable players and could make an argument for them as squad members, but are they any better the the likes of Weimann or Herd?

We are ruined if he stays, truly.

I think we can add amusing newspaper columns to the "list of things that we don't bother listening to UK Redsox about"

(winky)

I think that we've long since established that my sense of humo(u)r differs from the majority.

Signing other people's rejects after a season when we narrowly avoided relegation is just asking for trouble.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but under Doug we never (granted we got relegated once under Doug), faced a relegation dogfight in two consecutive seasons since we got promoted? In fairness, after 90/91, 94/95 and even after 02/03 when the squad needed to be drastically improved Doug spent. Granted that had changed by '06, but previous to that we always rebuilt after seasons of struggle.

I fear next year could be our third successive flirt with relegation if McLeish stays and we are looking at the likes of Karl Henry. That simply isn't good enough for Aston Villa.

Firstly, I'm not suggesting that Leon Best would be a good buy. However, in principle, what is so wrong with signing players who are unable to get regular games for a team that's challenging for a Champions League place ?
