Instead of finding Andy Carroll we should be looking for new Luc Nillis to play with Darren Bent.

I disagree with the midfielders not trusting Bent. He found a team mate more often than not when he had the ball at the weekend.

The ideal situation is to get a centre forward who is young, and good in the air, physical presence we can play off and can score goals, AND play alongside Bent who will benefit from that. Carroll being available is a perfect fit, IF Lerner wants to bankroll the deal. I still think he will give Lambert the funds for a couple of bigger signings, as logically he would have negotiated his budget to some extent when taking the job. Lambert is not stupid, and will say it is not all about money, but he was doing well at Norwich with his own squad, to leave that there has to have been a carrot dangled.

I don't see us going back to a bog standard 4-4-2 which you'd have to do to accommodate Carroll. Why spend all the time and effort in trying to develop a passing game to throw it all away for the sake of a over hyped bloke who has just flopped playing with much better players?

Not suggesting (necessarily) that we revert to a 4-4-2, but I would say that formation with the right players is no barrier to a decent passing game.

I think, sometimes prompted by lazy/dumb pundits, people can obsess about formations - no inference in that about anyone on here.

I love discussing/arguing about football as much as anyone but I am sometimes reminded that it is a simple game:
- score more than the other team to win
- look to play penetrative football to create the opportunities to score
- possession is key, given there are only three phases in football (you have the ball; they have the ball; no-one has the ball and you cannot score without possession but they might).

By the way, my view on Carroll - Red Scouse paid way too much and he had a poor season in a disjointed/poor team that was badly managed by King Kenny, but he showed signs towards the end of the season that there is something there and plenty of people better informed than me think he has something - Roy Hodgson for one.

With the right deal - he offers a target into feet and in the air; can be a foil for Bent as he sometimes was for Suarez; and gives us a different option to what we have now.

I think an intelligent manager would at least consider bringing him in (loan or transfer) and I think we have an intelligent manager.

Although, Carroll is going to end up somewhere, and he is the type of player Lambert could use. I'm not saying it's us categorically, but it wouldn't be a complete shock. The Moose has a little cock though. Of that there is little doubt.

why do people assume getting carroll means 442? Why not 4312 for example with attacking full backs giving us width and perhaps ireland in a free role behind the front 2? Don't think we'd get him anyway but it's just a thought

God we are a choosy bunch given last years spectacular success. I say if we can get him, go for it, sort systems later. We needed a presence against Allardyces thuggeees, we need support for Bent, we will need a winger as well, but lets have a go, not pretend to be something we are not. Carrol plus a winger may well bring cups and upper mid table. Fancy ideas above our present status may well bring O'Leary time again. Villa no. 9 = decent big centre forward.

IF we did get Caroll it does'nt neccesarily mean we'd be going back to the hoof ball of last season, Lambert is known for mixing and changing his formations and football style by the week. For what its worth I doubt we'll sign him anyway.
