Rhodes is an interesting one. It would be a gamble that could either work well or he could be the next Beckford.

Was Beckford that bad 10 in 38 games for everton

Weren't a lot of those 10 in cup ties, so probably against lower league opponents?  Certainly don't remember many in the PL!

Eight league goals.

Hardly Van Nistelrooy, but not exactly a bad return for a free transfer. Plus there was that goal against Chelsea. We've not scored a goal like that since 1992.

At 31 and probably about 7 million, Holt should be left well alone, MON can have him, pay him 50k a week and sit him on the bench.

Rhodes is a gamble I wish we'd take. And Butterfield from Barnsley.

Agree on Rhodes being a gamble, but for £3.5m surely he would be worth it.  Having seen him play a few times, he is very much like Bent.  Not particuarly great outside the box, but comes alive inside it.  If we can get a way of playing which allows Bent to be in the box more, he might be a good understudy.

Weren't we supposed to be interested in Butterfield earlier in the season and then he went and got a bad injury?  Same as above with Bent, if we could find a way of playing that allows Ireland a free role, he would be a decent understudy for him.  Same with Andy King from Leicester.

It is waste of time speculating who is joining Villa as we have to appoint OGS first then we probably see Wolf as new signing first and appoint two coach. OGS would have lot of different ideas and probably have a list of wonderful vikings and young Manchester United players to go for among others targets caught his eye while coaching Man utd Reserves or his Norwegian team.

a viking wolf , I love the sound of that .

If we get Solksjaer ,   we should go for Shinji Kagawa , he would be a great signing.

£7m would be silly money for him at his age but he's a good player who'd be a big favourite down here me thinks.

Only if we're finishing twelfth. He's not a top six hero.

He's just not very good.

I think it's a good example of the difference between the two options. Lambert would bring Grant Holt, an ageing, old-fashioned, technically limited (though definitely intelligent of movement), must-play-in-a-front-two target man; Solskjaer would take a risk on a young, technically gifted, pass-and-move, between-the-lines midfielder (who might bring the girls in to Villa Park like Laursen did). I know where my preference lies.

I'm certain that Holt will be a one (Premier) season wonder.

Holt reminds me off Harewood - good PL debut season that will prove to be the best in his career.

I don't think it's right to immediately assume Lambert would sign him if we appointed him.
