Funnily enough Alan Smith was in the same year as Goldberg and he was nowhere near the best footballer in the school.

Alan Smith was by far the best footballer at school. i played with him enough times to know that.Golberg was a year above him too.

Thinking back to 1970, when we were in the third division and their decent team of Astle, Hope and co.. was towards its end, I seem to remember about their obsession with us then - were we really like that in the mid 1990s when we were finishing top 4 and winning the League Cup and they were 2 divisions inferior ?

We didn't take a blind bit of notice of them.

I did.  They lost us the chance of winning the World Cup.

It makes me nostalgic for the late eighties and the nineties when for the most part Small Heath and Smethwick were mostly out of sight and out of mind. Did we go fourteen years without playing the noses in a league game? It must have been a similar amount of time we went without playing Albion in the league.

Them, the others from down by the A45, the ones from a totally different city further down the A45, our eternal indifference towards them is oil upon their bilious fires.

We went from 1987-2002 without playing either of them in the top division.

Luckily God is a Villa fan and fixed it so we could beat them in FA Cup and League Cup games. God hates Small Heath so much he even came out of long term creational retirement to create the Simod cup just so we could have an extra laugh at their expense.
