I know one of the blokes who got stabbed. He went on to be a trade unionist representing Birmingham’s bin men.

A few pals and I missed all the trouble as we went to the Atlas by the Blues ground straight after the game to see the topless barmaid. It was a promotion as they were about to demolish it as soon as it ran out of beer. It stood where the iron head now rests.

After the game there were a few scuffles on the way back to the coach, which was on the big car park that used to be behind the Aston Tavern. It kicked off again, quite badly, as we got on the coach. Was a proper moody night IIRC.

A truly fantastic match. One of those times where you lose and it really was no disgrace to be beaten by the better side. I think Nigel Spink was the first Villa player to touch the ball when he picked it out of the net after 43 seconds (or thereabouts). We responded well and I think Ken Mc Naught had a goal disallowed for pushing at a corner which was harsh to say the least. I do remember it kicking off in Witton Lane after the game when we came out of the Holte. From memory there were quite a few of them in the Witton Lane stand nearest to the Holte End and there were some things getting chucked during the game. Whether these were the same "Ultras" involved in the skirmishes in Witton Lane I couldn't say. It was quite tasty although I didn't see weapons involved. I can remember what happened 40 years ago as if it was yesterday, yet sometimes I can't remember yesterday, as Mrs. VV always reminds me with delight.

Some of the stuff that went on with the Italians and dodgy refs in the 70s and 80s was criminal.

Yes. Brian Glanville and another writer whose name I cannot remember wrote a series of articles in the 70s/80s under the title, The Golden Years of the Fix'. I believe the articles were sent to Uefa but no action was taken.

Some brilliant stories in Clough autobiographies, about the Derby v Juventus games in the early 70s. Clough and Peter Taylor were half expecting to wake up next to a horse's head before the second leg.

In Peter Taylor's autobiography, he recalls that at half time in Turin (score: 1-1), Juventus's Helmut Haller, walked off with the German referee towards the referee's room. Taylor spotted this and tried to intercept them saying, "I speak German, gentlemen!" but was pinned to the tunnel wall by the home 'security' people.

At the post-match interview, Clough got the multilingual Brian Glanville to translate "I will not speak to cheating Italian bastards!" to the local press.
