I'd concede that they're a bigger club.

How? Other than a trophy winning blitz in the 80's what have they done?

Get a grip, mate.

The trophy winning blitz in the 70s?

The one in the sixties? Or in the 2000s?

OK other than all that what have they done?

Another five to ten years of mediocrity (fingers crossed) for Liverpool and the old, natural  order of things will be partly restored!

It's amazing how many people on here have been watching "The Life Of Brian". ;)

The thing about Liverpool is that if you are in your late 30s or 40s, you'll remember growing up with them winning pretty much everything, as well as getting media fawning that makes anything Man U get now look mild by comparison.

Back then you'd get next to no live league football on the telly, and when it was on, it was invariably Liverpool (Man United were doing their quarter of a century with no league titles thing at the time so attracted far less attention).

They also must be the luckiest club on the planet, too, but that's another argument.

Anyway, that's why so many people in my sort of age range still can't fucking stand Liverpool, I reckon.

I started my  football life "dislikes"  by hating Leeds but Liverpool soon took over. They have had  some real hateworthy characters but Emlyn Hughes was on top of my list.

Anyone in their 30's I reckon. I remember being one of only two Villa fans in primary school. I still remember one lunchtime, sitting at a table with the older boys and one lad asking everyone who they supported:

"Liverpool"
"Liverpool"
"Liverpool"
"Liverpool"
"Aston Villa"
"Urgh, second division?"

Character building, even then I knew supporting a team wasn't dependent on them playing in the top flight and winning everything. Villa have been tormenting me for a loooong time, ha ha.

Won the league in a few other decades? Won a few European Cups?

Lets not start letting anger about Downing get in the way of logic - Liverpool are a huge club, one of the biggest two in the country and (living abroad) one of the ones that everyone always asks about.

Ok they're having a PR disaster at the moment but its a football city with a lot of great fans - we shouldn't forget that either.

Not that Downing has contributed to anything positive there, or is anything other than a weasly little Robert Ford lookalike..

And then there are the cinema goers in Liverpool who went to see the silent movie "The Artist" and came out asking for their money back. 'Because there was no talking in it'.
It must be true, I heard it on the BBC news.

He's just making excuses for him to cover his own back as he's the man who shelled out £20m for him.

Yup

I looked at RAWK the other day as I was interested to see what they thought of Downing, and was surprised to see the first signs of them getting uncomfortable about Dalglish

Carroll 35m
Adam 9m
Henderson 20m
Downing 20m

That's nigh on £85m spent there. I struggle to think of a worse way to spend that kind of money.

Great isn't it? Won't it be interesting to see how their world is when their Americans austerity measures kick in.

As for Downing, it couldn't have worked out too much bettter thus far could it?
Downing had a very good season for us last season we tend to forget. His replacement Nzogbia has been muck for us so far really. One assist, no goal. One assist more than Downing but dont think its worked out all that well for us. As a team, we are certainly weakened by his departure.

The balance of 10m has gone back to RAL. I dont think its worked out that well for us at all.

I see your point, but N'Zogbia's been no worse in his first season here than Downing was in his. May come good given time, as he has the ability.

Their away support is amongst the worst we see at Villa Park, year in, year out, I reckon. Everton's is even worse.
