I've heard the contentious theory before, probably in The Lakes. It does insult the Irish who settled in Liverpool, so I can see why some people are upset. On the other hand, it also highlights the work ethic in the Irish who continued their journey furthet than Victimland.

Sorry to drag this out but perhaps an alternative theory is that the most dynamic Irish immigrants found work in the first place they landed, and that it was less immediately employable who had to travel further. Of course this would blow our scouse stereotypes, laying them at the door of the Irish, and the word of the apparent authority on the matter, Jimmy McGovern, out of the water, but ho hum.

I wasn't going to bother but just for a bit of balance: both my grandmothers' were Irish came over to England as teenagers one settled in Birmingham the other in London and both worked hard all their lives.  Now, I'm an Englishman married to an Irish woman and living in Ireland for the past twenty-five years and during that time I've been insulted on many occations due in the main to total ignorance.  The best insult I ever got was when at work some bloke wanted a spare part and when told the price said that he could get it cheaper in another garage (which he couldn't btw) so I asked him why he didn't go there in the first place he then said to me " there's better than you shot in the North every day" There's no answer to that is there?  Another beaut was when someone came in and said "is Jimmy here"? to which I replied "no" he then asked for Benny to which I also replied no he then said withour realising who I was "Fuck it I was told not to deal with that English ****** he knows fuck all" I still laugh at his reaction when I spoke in other than monosylabic terms and he realised that he had been speaking to the English ****** all along.  As I said just for balance.

My crime - being an England fan.

I never knew that Liverpool fans/Scousers in general were so anti-England.

Not so much of surprise when most of the population have Irish ancestry.

It also helps explain another Scouse trait: sitting on their arses complaining that life's not giving them a fair crack.

Think about it. For generations the Irish have fled poverty and famine to create world-wide diaspora.  Liverpool's population is made from the same gene pool that said at the nearest port of debarkation, "Right that'll do for me.  Where's the Dole Office?"

Be it a joke of a misinterpreted comment I, like most Irish on here, found it offensive.  Change Irish for black or Muslim and there would have been an even bigger shit storm on here...
Still as Sepp says lets just shake hands and forget it.

But the muslims didn't flee Ireland in search of a better life.
