For Crying out Loud, it may not be comfortable to accept that the culture of Liverpool is different from the rest of England and the reasons behind that culture is historic, but unless you are able to give a different explanation, just calling the mods aggresive and smug does not help your arguement

Mods - I'm sorry that what was meant to be a light-hearted, if perhaps ill-worded quip has caused you so much grief. I've tried to explain the origin and my interpretation - which has been said rather spoils a joke. 

To those who've taken offence - there was none intended, except to people from Liverpool.

Just to add to the stereotyping going on, Downing looks to me like the kind of man that wouldn't risk hitting a man. Or a man that might hit him back, more to the point.

I didn't get it, at first it came across as saying all Irish are lazy.  I've not heard the joke before and as Dave said if it needs explaining it's not very funny.  Or I'm just terminally thick like Risso and a few others.
