My crime - being an England fan.

I never knew that Liverpool fans/Scousers in general were so anti-England.

Not so much of surprise when most of the population have Irish ancestry.

It also helps explain another Scouse trait: sitting on their arses complaining that life's not giving them a fair crack.

Think about it. For generations the Irish have fled poverty and famine to create world-wide diaspora.  Liverpool's population is made from the same gene pool that said at the nearest port of debarkation, "Right that'll do for me.  Where's the Dole Office?"

I do hope that diatribe was in jest
are you fucking joking?

Sorry. You're absolutely right.  Jokes about work-shy Scousers are sooo 1980s.

File alongside nicking your wheels and holding a minute's silence at every opportunity.

Of course you won't find any of those stereotypes on either this or the Suarez thread. No, sir. After all we've got a new one: all Scousers are racist.

Villanation, I know.  Just as a joke that links the large Irish heritage and the supposed benefit culture of the city is a bit of a generalisation.  A joke which, I'll repeat, I've heard told in a city with its own large Irish community - Manchester - so I guess is more a comment on the latter rather than the former; as well as being used in the work of a Liverpudlian playwright.

Was it a joke about work shy scousers? Had a lot of Irish this and Irish that in it which is what I thought most people were commenting about.

And as for pointing out it was in the work of Jimmy McGovern, are you sure he wasn't highlighting it as an issue. I don't know, I never saw that show but his other works normally came with certain tones to raise issues.

The point of the joke - as I understand it - is that people left Ireland in their droves  to escape poverty and hunger and went to all corners of Great Britain and USA and probably elsewhere too.  Many though got off the boat on the other side of the Irish Sea and, for no doubt what at the time were perfectly legitimate reasons, chose to settle in Liverpool.  However, from the standpoint of now you could say that they were the ones that couldn't be bothered to haul themselves on to Manchester, London, New York or Boston and, as such, set the tone for the stereotype work-shy Scouser of today.

I'm sorry if some people are offended, but I actually think it's a joke that pokes fun at a certain mentality as oppose to laughing at the Irish in general or the horrific conditions of the 1840s onwards that forced their migration.

The thing is that there are racial and cultural stereo types
Its like saying to the Germans dont worry about the detail or latins dont do tomorrow what can be done today or to the English the dress code is smart casual, it goes on.

Bloody hell.  I don't care much for the the football team, but you're on dodgy ground there unless I've totally misunderstood your post.

Does it?  Repeating jokes isn't much of an excuse is it?
