We didn't sign him, we don't seem to have made a serious attempt to sign him, and he wasn't for sale. Just a few things that seem to have been forgotten in the rush for the razor blades.

I don't watch Scottish football so don't now how he has progressed but to judge his suitability by the player that he was 5 years ago seems bizarre.

Spot on, Chris.  Anyone who  hasn`t seen the guy play for years is going to be  surprised if we do snag him.  He`s very good and better than most of the tat we`ve featured in C/M  for the past four seasons.
Take a look at him now, and then comment.

Norm.

But our manager enquired about signing him, which is the point being made.

I watch a great deal of Scottish football and I'd say he has improved a great deal in a more attacking role. Don't get me wrong. He's not going to be the kind of player who is good enough to fire us into the top four but I think he would be an above average performer in an average PL team. Nothing exciting.

He's certainly one of the better players in the SPL.

I'm sure our manager makes enquiries about lots of players.

Fuck me playing in the SPL is hardly La Liga is it?

More like division 1

Kris Boyd was the SPL's record ever scorer and he couldn't cut it a Boro

Chris Commons was largely shit at Derby and now he is a world beater for Celtic.

Also in 2006 some has-been player who made his name in Scottish football set up both goals for some regional club called Barcelona in the final of some competiton known as the European Cup.

Did Maloney get Player of The Year in Scotland? I think Carlos may have as well, I could be wrong.
How did both do in the EPL ?
The Scottish league is by no means comparable to the EPL .
It doesn't take alot to be better than most in the SPL. That doesn't mean you can cut it in the EPL.
Henrik Larsson is an exception to the rule. He had obvious class and didn't Man U want to get him back ?

All I've seen is people commenting on the quote by the manager that he expressed an interest in a player, and a quote from news source that we will go back in January for him, mostly saying they think it would be a bad idea.  I don't know why you have to insinuate people are getting suicidal.  The only overreaction seems to be in your post.

Re-reading the article in the link it's interesting AM seems to think the Scottish leagues are a valuable source of playing talent.  What big names have moved down south recently and flourished?  Hutton hasn't, Gordon hasn't, Maloney didn't, Boyd didn't.  Adam is about the only successful one I can think of and I doubt many other PL clubs are focusing their scouting system north of the border.   Again I can only assume the attraction is cheapness.

James McArthur and James McArthy spring to mind. Both of them have done decently well at Wigan. Indeed, a few people on here have suggested we sign them from Wigan. I remember saying how both of them would be excellent signings for us when they moved south. Steven Fletcher has been pretty decent for Burnley and Wolves. That is three of the top of my head.

Following your line of argument I could argue that the EPL is pants because Charlie Adam has done well there when he was bloody useless at Rangers.
