On the Bobby Charlton thing.  I think I posted on here a few years ago how on one occasion when the late Denis Howell MP attended out monthly Referees Association meeting (he was a member of our branch) he was asked to name some of the worst players he ever had to deal with.  The first name he came up with?...Bobby Charlton whom he said never stopped moaning from first whistle to last.

I always got the impression that Charlton was ashamed of where he came from, preferring to consider himself a Manc.  Probably irrational on my part.

Ask Ron Atkinson about him.

My mate used to live in Nottingham when he was a kid.

When he was 12 or so, his parents were selling their house. One day, none other than Mr Kenny Burns, who had just moved to Forest from Small Heath, came to view it. Whilst he was there, Burns asked my mate's Dad if he could use the bog. He did so, and shortly after, left.

When he'd gone, my mate found himself with reason to use the bog, and found out that not only had Burns left a smell which suggested something had died in there, he'd also pebble dashed it.

The animal. Animal.

When his parents sold the house, they moved to Belfast, where my friend got to know Caron Keating very well. Very, very well indeed, and according to him

Its all right, you can legally say whatever you like about Caron Keating as you can't defame the (sadly) deceased.

Unlike his brother.

When I lived in the N.E. Jack and his family lived in the same village. I found him to be the down to earth bloke that I always thought he would be.
A giant of a man.  When he spoke you listened ! Even at his age then (70ish)  he still looked hard as nails! He also has a great sense of humour.

In my youth, the team I played for won a competition (not for being good i hasten to add) and ended up on a TV programme. Our 'prize' was a trip to Old Trafford for a tour and a training session at their training ground (it was a red gra pitch i remember that much)

Anyway, Bobby Charlton was the bloke that took us around Old Trafford, and although he didn't do anything bad in particular, he was a right miserable bastard

Frank Stapleton was a nice bloke though.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Jack a couple of times and would agree with your sentiments.

Had the good grace to pose for a photo with my then ten-year-old son.

I almost got into a fight with Ricardo Scimeca and entourage in a Chinese in Balsall Common many years ago.

His brother was being a pillock and acting up.

You might need to be a bit older and have a bloody good memory, but the most riotous night out I have ever had was in London with a bunch of Millwall fans of whom I knew one.

The player that made the evening? John Colquhoun.

Was he the one that played for Sheffield United in the late 70s?

Ron Atkinson once told Jack Charlton he didn't particularly like his brother Bobby. The reply was along the lines of "I don't like him either"!

Pre-season friendly in Sweden about 25 years ago.
David Platt walked into the bar and, gesturing with his thumb and forefinger a couple of inches apart, said 'there's that much c**t in here and I only want this much'.
This was followed by us charging round the streets with Derek Mountfield playing knock off ginger.

Also, being in the restaurant of the Hotel Moscow in Simferopol when Sid found the weevils in his bread.

Mountfield was mental that night.

A few years back (2000 ish) I watched an England training session out in Belgium or Holland (can't remember which) and was with a couple of mad Sunderland supporters. When the session had finished, all the players ran off to get on the coach followed by Kevin Keegan and finally Peter Beardsley who was assistant at the time. The coach was a few hundred yards away and we were separated from it by a metal fence .
One of the Sunderland fans started shouting out 'Peter! Peter!' over and over again. Beardsley got on the bus but Keegan pointed out this bloke yelling for him. Eventually Peter Beardsley got off the coach and sauntered his way over to us.
The Sunderland lad passed him an autograph book and a pen and said 'Can you get Kevin Phillips to sign this?'

For a scouser and an ex nose, Tony Evans was always a good laugh. Had a few beers with him over the years.

In the early days of Sky, Mark Walters often popped into the Wilsons in Knowle to watch a game or two. Quiet lad but pleasant enough.

I saw Cyrille Regis quite a few times in the Yard of Ale in Brum. Always approachable even when I was at my pissedess. Well, thats how I saw it.

After one of the Masters six a side tournaments held in Coventry I had a couple of jars with Tony Morley and Sid Cowans who were complete gents.

There's a theme here....
