I honestly think that we already have our man in place - but rules are rules - and all this nonsense is exactly that.  Papers and bookies are filling their boots and we're all getting sucked in.  It's a case of don't believe everything you read in the papers in my view.

You must have blind faith. If there was ever an example of how not to recruit a Manager we have demonstrated the perfect method. A complete balls-up from the start - and the pantomine still has a few more performances to run. Our board are so out of touch with the majority of fans its laughable. Why we're pissing around like this when Hughes is available is crazy.

It probably is blind faith I guess, although I don't think that Randy et al are so, so far out of touch as to let this McLeish thing drag on for much longer.  I really think that the club's silence is defeaning because they don't want to let it slip that in fact we have our man when the rules say we can't.  It would amaze me if we really are that shit.

Hughes is not yet available to talk to though.

I'm sure if we approached Fulham now that they have Jol in place some sort of arrangement could be agreed. We've contacted Blues when they haven't agreed to let McLeish go.

...say 'Sky sources'.

I don't believe this grand theory that we've squirrelled away a legendary manager and not one person in the press has got wind of it, but you're talking like the club is run by a bunch of idiots who blindly and irrationally pick names off a list. I don't like Villa being in the media for these reasons any more than you do but like everyone, the press abhor a vacuum and have as much clue as the rest of us. I tend to think Villa have probably made mistakes in their strategy but I'd be astounded if it's as insanely depressing as the headlines are making out.

I just don't think these Americans are very savvy on Football matters in this Country - as has been shown in the last week or so.

I'm clinging to the hope that somehow this is all an eleborate roose by RL to direct attention away from our real target, a top European Manager or David Moyes.  That McLeish is simply a divertion.

The comments from Sir Graham though about his surprise that we didn't have anyone lined up and seemed to be jumping from one candidate to another in disorganised fashion has worried me.

It's fine that a bunch of novices like us think it's odd, most of us have never set foot inside a football club boardroom and certainly never been in negotiations for a senior football Management position, however when a highly experienced and respected Villa man like GT comes out with it I start to worry that maybe, just maybe, they don't know what the fuck they're doing.

Perhaps he's just responding to what he sees in print though, like the rest of us?
He's still highly thought of around VP, they even consulted him on the GH appointment.

But that doesn't mean he's in the loop on this one, and has any better idea about what RL and Faulkner are up to than we do. If the manager we wanted was out of contract and available I tend to think we'd already have him in place now. Which leads me to think that it's someone like Moyes or Hughes -and they have to tread carefully. In the formers case, because of backlash from Everton fans (Kenwright would need to be in a position to have a decent replacement ready to slot in virtually straight away).  And in the latter, because of the notice period on his Fulham deal. It might also look better (to a degree) if the perception is out there that we've contacted various managers before we turn to Hughes, to avoid any notions of tapping up and so on.

There were quite a few people actually involved in the game who had heard news of Hughes to Villa for a while. I genuinely don't think if we were interested, him taking up an option in his Fulham contract would put us off either. MM and others might have got the impression (and deliberately been given that impression) that it wasn't a goer, but due to the sensitive nature of this one that may be how the club has to play it.

It would make more sense if the board just came out and said we haven't had any contact with McLeish.

But if they do that, attention simply turns to the next bloke high up on the bookies list of favourites.  And what if the next guy is actually the bloke they're talking to?

Peter Pannu wants £5.4m from Villa for McLeish?!?!?

Appointing him would be bad enough but paying £5.4m for the fucker?
