no one knows anything 100%. did we make contact with mcclaren or didnt we? did we turn rafa down or did he turn us down? has any contact been made with hughes? is RM the only man still in the frame.

no bloody clue.

it seems punters have used up all their money on this one. even though RM's appointment seems closest out of all the candidates so far that have been favourite, he has remained available at about 2/1. Other favourites have been going long odds on!

Right, i've just spent the day cutting down a tree and have had some time to forget about it, and then think about it again, and..... i still don't like it one bit.

the implication of employing someone who's only experience is operating on a shoestring budget and who will struggle to attract any big names is obvious, and like it or not is the way Lerner seems to be going. We'll soon know when we work out the net spend once Young and others are sold.

I can handle a bit of austerity but i can't help feeling he'll be walking into a hornets nest with very little protection. He seems a nice guy, and I can't shake the image of him walking into the dressing room with Dunne, Collins, Warnock, Ireland and Co sitting there - i hope he's got a body armour suit for all those knives in his back and a good PR man to bring with him. He'll need them.

We'll see if he wants to join us, but i wouldn't if i was him. Even if Wigan went down under him next season, he'll still have a relatively good reputation to attract a decent championship side - if it goes tits up with us he's finished.  Hopefully if he does come, he'll get the existing players onside, bring in some good new ones and maybe Lerner will actually throw some money at him. If we start badly, his signings are duds and he can't handle the personalties in the dressing room, then he'll be gone before Christmas. I'd say the latter is more likely than the former. And the only one to blame will be Lerner.

As I said earlier, Roberto Martinez could easily be Graham Turner re-visited.

We're at a bit of a crossroads and gambles are the last thing we should be attempting.  That list aint great though!!
He is going to be himself, it is totally unfair to compare him with other managers who have failed.

I'm comparing the randam nature of taking a shock, largely unproven Manager into our Club when it's at a real crossroads - we've tried this before and we ended up getting relegated.

This appointment would remind me of that one.  That's the parrallel

We also tried it with Little and Gregory, and they did okay.

Different times. The teams were still largely British, and the leagues were not as polarised. Besides both had connections with the club.

And as relevant as Graham Turner.

Honest question, no personal dig, just genuinely interested. You obviously run this website (with others) and the magazine. And were quite vocal in the anti-Ellis stuff which I agreed with.

But if Ellis was in charge, and....

One year - we sold our best player - and the next we sold our best player and the manager walked out after a breakdown with the chairman , and then the next year , our best player walked out, and maybe our other best player , and then we appointed a guy who has hovvered around the relegation zone for his PL career.

What would you have done ?. I'm genuinely interested, coz to me , Lerner is getting away with murder, I am pretty sure if this was Ellis in charge, there'd be bloody murder going on.

Whats your take ?

Randy has put his hand in his pocket countless times and I believe will continue to do so. There is no simple formula for success at a football club.

Absolutely true, If Ellis was still in charge and all this was going on all hell
would have let loose. Lerner is a lucky man with the longest honeymoon in history.
Still he's our best/only option at the moment

Times change, we haven't lost our 'best player' for the past three years, neither has Roberto Martinez been appointed yet and if you can't see the difference between the cost-cutting, penny-pinching and lack of ambition that typified Doug's time and the £200 million+ Randy has invested, then I would stick to Formula One.

I see Kendrick is now saying Martinez is 'still in the balance.'

I'd like to that is because we have a better option lined up, but of course it could mean he doesn't want to come.
