When O'Neill and Lerner turned up I think everyone sat up and took notice that we had a manager of repute. The last year has reversed all that and it feels like we are back where we started.

We have a choice - we either 'compete' for the Top4 or reconcile ourselves that for now, that boat has gone (perhaps sit it out until some of the biggest clubs disappear in debt). It could be a long wait.

If we want to be taken seriously by existing players and potential ones, we need a manager with experience. I am thinking Van Gaal type but even Moyes has some credibility. Rafa has the medals but basically he is mad.

If we go for a Martinez or Coyle then I think the board has picked the option marked 'mid table' and we should expect the 'top player leaves Villa' to accelerate.

Option 3 - bring back a club man, someone who is 100% Villa. SGT has had his bite but isnt it about time we let BFR put aside his KKK hat and have another go ?

That would be a hood, not a hat, and no. Definitely not.

Whelan certainly gave a very different outlook to Bruce after the Bent signing, he was very very upfront with praise for randy and our correct approaches.  Bodes well for NZogbia as a Young replacement.

@avfccentral not sure if Lerner was on board his jet, but it left bhx this morning ! #avfc

That was posted on Twitter, I see no reason for Randy to be leaving England unless 1: He's gone to interview someone 2: His jet has left the UK to pick up someone.

3: The tweet may not even be true.

And no, I don't check that link as a matter of course, it was posted the last time people were getting frantic at the movements of Randy's plane.

John e:-- Fair comments well made.  I can see the difference in styles adopted by different managers.

For Martinez, I'll accept he favours a passing game over a counter attacking long ball one. But Wigan playing good football for the last two years? Sorry, I just don't see it.

This thread stood at 220 pages when I called it a day last night.  I've tried to avoid getting involved but the thoughts of Roberto Martinez, nice man that he seems fills me with fear.  I have been watching Villa for over 50 years and this (dis)appointment ranks up there with some of the other beauts we've had in that time.  It's a bit like asking for a Bang and Olufson Hi Fi for Christmas and getting a fucking Amstrad!  But then again what do I know? At the time I didn't want Ron Saunders!  Hasitly runs for cover.

Wouldn't he stay until after he's been shown to the fans?
