Can't see the problem with Martinez. We're not going to get a top-class manager, so why worry about trying to get Ancelotti etc.?
Maybe not, but we could do a damn site better than Martinez.

so let's have some excitement on the pitch instead with some good football.
Again, this myth that Wigan play 'good football'

I fail to see how any of the managers on the list above are so much better than Martinez.

From what little I've seen of them, they always seem to be able to pass the ball much better than most teams in the league, which helps when playing a game where passing is quite an important part of the game. Though I cannot say I watch them weel in week out like I do the Villa, so couldn't pass a complete judgment on them. I presume you do watch them week in week out that's how you know it's a myth.

Indeed.

The idea of someone like Ancelotti is to try and better ourselves.  I'm sure Chelsea fans in the mid 90s said "We're not going to get a world class player" until Gullit rocked up at their door.  That raised their profile and gave them a 'cool factor' and you can trace where they are now back to that one thing.

Also, what we have right now is an almost unique opportunity where two managers of the pedigree of Ancelotti and Rafa are out of work and said they want to manage in England.  We'd be fools not to take advantage of that.

Hey OzVilla - if we want to take a gamble on Martinez, we could appoint Ange Postecoglou !!!!

Won the A-League only losing 1 game and played some fantastic football, could be the next Arsene Wenger - lol

I've seen his team play us and i've seen various other games with them involved and i've seen no evidence of any good football.

I've seen plenty of evidence that they play shit football.

Chelsea lose 6-0, 8-0.
Pompey lose 4-0
Spurs lose 9-1

The biggest problem last season was our defence, had that been up to speed we'd have quite possibly finished 6th.
I'd like to know how Mister Cavalier is going to rectify that, his Wigan side are looser than Jordan's pissflaps.

Yeah, none of them have ever won anything.

if the board can pull of a top draw manager like Ancelloti, Van Gaal etc then thats fair enough.

but if we overlook at young inspiring manager like Martines and plump for the safe boring hands of absolute dullards like Moyes or Hughes, who have both had good opportunities with big clubs and done sweet bugger all,

then i'l be a bit upset

Blackpool were constantly highlighted in their games on Match of the day, four or five players would be constantly out of position bombing forward and when they had to defend they were all over the place and never got into the right positions or formation to defend a counter attack.

Wigan are exactly the same.

Appointing Martinez wouldn't necessarily be a disaster.  But it would be inviting disaster, so why on earth would we want to do that?

In considering him, let alone interviewing him, I must admit my faith in the board's ability to get this crucial decision right has taken something of a knock.

2nd worm hole on the left.  If you get to the reality where Jordan Henderson is worth £20m you've gone too far.

Strange interview just now with Whelan on SSN. He spent most of it talking as if Martinez has more or less gone to Villa and then at the end, when asked for his gut feeling, said he felt he would stay for another year or two. He was extremely complimentary about the way the Villa have conducted themselves over any possible deal, really went overboard about it, which is always nice to hear

I'm with RVB on this one.

Don't recall anyone coming out of Villa Park after the 1-1 this year complimenting Martinez and his total football. We even managed to beat them away when we were well off-form. And it was a dour  game iirc.

And if Fletch is misinformed about the mighty Wigan because he doesn't watch them every week, then the same argument must apply to all those on this forum who trot out the 'Martinez plays great football' line.

If its not a myth, its fast becoming a bloody cliche.

If it was Oyston on now saying that we had permission to talk to Ian Holloway, I get the feeling that those sticking up for Martinez would be having a dicky fit.  Yet he did an almost miraculous job in getting Blackpool promoted and nearly keeping them up.  Blackpool play nice football and can't defend, so let's go and get Wurzel Gummidge.

its more about a football philosophy though isnt it,

i'm sure Stoke played some great games last season, i'm told they even played Arsenal of the park, it doesnt make them a better footballing side than Arsenal, but it happened on that day all the same,
the footballing philosophy of Tony Pullis remains the same, big long throws into the box, and a very direct way of getting the ball forward into goalscoring positions,

on the whole its affective, but not pretty to watch,
ditto the same for Allardyce, thats their football philosophy, yes you will get a few decent games, but in general you know what to expect

with Martines and Coyle, yes you  might get some shitty games where there seems little football played, but there philosophy is much different,  they are looking to play the ball around to feet and create chances by disecting passes and good movement.
the fact that it doesnt always come of does not mean thats not the desired end effect.
but surely you can see the difference between the two styles ?

thats the sort of game i want at Villa, i know its not that important to others, it is to me, we are all different, so Martines would be welcome by me because of the way he tries to play the game,

Just a point - apart from Redknapp, I can't think of any managers who've had previous Premier League experience & have won a trophy/achieved anything in their current jobs .  So, if it's true that prem experience is one of the criteria, I can't understand why.
