Whelan, Martinez and Wigan Athletic FC have been used as the biggest smokescreen in the history of Aston Villa.

I doubt it.  Randy isn't that machavellian and we only know about is through Whelan's fat gob, which we can't control.

You never compromise your honour. If you dont have that you have nothing. But stepping on a few toes isn't out of the question.

If these names being bandied around are true, it just proves that the Villa, once a major Managerial draw card, just cannot excite top class Managers to want to come here.

When we got Houlier, I consoled myself that the nature of the Boards search and it's obvious awkward timing meant our options were limited.  However nearly 12 months on, we find ourselves with similar limited options, Managers choosing to go elsewhere (Jol to Fulham) and either inexperienced up and comers or failed has beens applying for the role.

We're becoming second rate.

I assume most of the Wigan fans would expect RM to move on to bigger things, if comes out and says he's staying they're going to love him even more and Whelan.

I like Martinez...I can't really say more than that.

Oh purlease.  How about just letting the board get on with their job rather than adding 2 and 2 toegther and coming up with 5.

That's fine, I hope I am wrong, i'd love nothing more than to see Loius Van Gaal's fat arse lording around Bodymoor Heath.

But from what we're hearing, it's McClaren (subject to Internet meltdowns) and Martinez that are/were the main contenders which quite frankly aint gonna keep the likes of Darren Bent beyond his next contract review.

Well if we weren't in for Jol but were in for McClaren (granted only media reports about his interview etc) you'd want to be asking some serious questions why.

I wrote in an earlier post that what i think villa need in theory (young up and coming manager, clear vision for long term success) is something for another time.

There are new problems in the modern game, one of the biggest we face is holding onto players and demonstrating that we are a club that can attract and hold onto players. At a time when we are going to lose Young, possibly Downing, need to replace Friedel etc, i think this is the wrong time to take a gamble on someone like Martinez.

I don't even mind Martinez, he was obviously going to achieve less at Wigan than at a bigger club, and i thought he did an amazing job at Swansea.

But would our players respect him enough to follow his plans? They didn't appear to respect Houllier so i doubt it.

The main reasons i can see for appointing him would be financial ones, but even then i'm not sure it makes sense. I don't know what we spend on marketing, but hiring a big name manager would do more to get people through the door than any of that. We rarely sold out last season, the right appointment could change the mood about the place and raise revenues across the club.

I think we are a at a bit of a crossroads at the moment. A lot of fans are questioning if they can keep on investing money on season tickets, shirts etc. at a time when they are facing hard economic times and little prospect of on field success (much of this is beyond Villas control and the fault of Sky, glory hunting Man U and Chelsea Fans across the country, player wages, agents and so on)

These things have an impact on multiple levels, the important financial realities, but also the harder to quantify impact of improved morale.

I remember SGT comments when he was appointed the first time, that a big club falls faster when things aren't going well. I think that is spot on and it's also true in reverse, if you get things feeling like they are improving, they improve quicker.

We fell back significantly last season, we are losing young. This is not the time for an appointment that will have a negative or even neutral impact. We can only do that from a position of strength. It's vitally important that they get this right.

Goal.com are reporting that McClaren is 'in talks' with Vitesse Arnhem, funnily enough.

I bet their fans will go mental...

Then why were people saying last night they were relieved that we've turned down McLaren? or are we going by the Twitter rumours again?
