If it's Martinez, and he turns out to be absolutely legendary, you have it on record that those supporting him now can be smug and say 'I told you so' to me whenever I raise an opinion on here from now on. But I don't think I'll be seeing those comments somehow, and in the event that I am, I won't give a shit at that point.

Holy shit!

Just above the grinning dutchman wannabe for me, but below Benitez (who i was pretty unsure on).

Hopefully won't be the case.

Martinez is somebody West Brom or Bolton would appoint, Not a top club with a Billionaire owner, who buy £20m strikers.
And I really dont think MM was talking about Martinez when hinting that he didn't want to get anybody's hopes up.

"Oh no, please dont do anything to jeopardise the Martinez deal.." No, I doubt it.
I agree with Whelan,I'd be suprised if he was Villas manager. I just hope its us being thorough and seeing as many people as possible. Even though I dont even know why he would be considered.

We have a pretty thread bare squad right now that needs alot of work and entrusting that to someone like Martinez is madness Houllier for all his issues was an experianced manager and he struggled I can not see how Martinez can come in and do any better.

Maz and Dave W. talking total sense - really not the time to take a HUGE gamble. If they do go with him, it will probably time for Randy to step forward and explain the club's new strategy.

I would be interested to know when is the right time to take a HUGE gamble? Because no time is the right time in truth....

When your manager retires having just bought his thirtieth trophy into the club.

Obviously an agreement with Rafa couldn't be reached so we've moved on.

To be honest, all we have on that is SSN saying it fell apart because of Benitez's spending requirements. I honestly can't see how they could possibly deduce that much information about what was said.

I dunno, we all remember what a big-mouthed twat Rafa is. Still wouldn't mind him being our big-mouthed twat though.

Look at it this way, this is arguably the most important season in Randy Lerners time here. The first four years felt like we were on the up, on the verge of achieving something.

Of course last year was transitional thanks to our mate dropping us in the shit when his ' ME! ME! ME! ' alarm went off.

So now, facing the prospect of losing our best player for the third season in a row and the need for a major team rebuild (including purchasing a goalkeeper, right back, left back, possible centre half, winger and partner for Bent) , I don't know about you guys, but I would have thought this is the wrong time to go for a promising, inexperienced man.

Now is the time to get a been there -done it, respected manager with an accomplished  back up team . It worries me the wrong choice, given the keys to the safe, will set the club back for years to come.

And that's why I think Martinez is too much of a risk .

I reckon Sky took a flier then made up an excuse for them getting it wrong. It'd be interesting to see betting patterns during those coupel of hours.

Probably would gamble from a position of strength. After losing our best players for a few seasons in a row, followed by a brush with relegation. Another misstep and we are out of the picture for a long time (especially adding the whole Fair Play factor too).

Benitez - La Liga winner, FA Cuo winner, Champions League winner.
Martinez - two 16th place finishes. That's it.

There's a massive, gaping chasm between those two records, I find it hard to believe we couldn't get someone at an intermediary point between them.

I can't imagine any shortlist that would have both rafa and Martinez on it frankly. What was the criteria? they're both foreign?

In that case we have no need to worry at all about getting Martinez as he is lined up to succeed Ferguson at Man Utd...excellent news, we can now move on to 20 pages on the next candidate on the list!

Rafa would have brought a wealth of knowledge, but more importantly an air of importance that we are a big club. Martinez is a mouse in comparison. We need a lion.

As I've just said then, no need to worry, because Martinez is probably off to Chelsea in that case...

When you've been relegated, or when you've been rubbing along mid-table for a few seasons. Not when you've just slipped from a good position and need to get back there ASAP.
