I heard some idiot on TS today saying If Lerner had given MON the money for Bent we would have been in the Top 4 . Where do these idiots get their info from.

Listen, don't slag me off for this,I am only the messenger. I dont agree with it either for a reason I will put at the end.
But if you believe Pat Murphy , Midlands correspondant for BBC (and mostly on Radio 5) - he states MON wanted to sign Bent twice and RL would not sanction the 12m it was going to cost.

Whether you believe it or not, it came from the BBC Midlands correspondant who is apparently well connected at the club

(now , I don't believe it for this reason. Pat Murphy gave the transfer window of the 2nd incident - which was the time we bought Downing - I could not see why Lerner would sanction to spend 12 million quid for  a guy on crutches - but not for what was even then obviously the missing piece of the jigsaw)

Murphy's better connected with MON than he is with Villa.  Pretty much every time I've heard him on Radio 5 he's been talking down the Villa, and talking up MON.

He's also had a stick up his arse about not getting any access to Randy Lerner.

Remember Jol had already agreed to hoin Fulham last year until Ajax put the block on it at the last moment.

I bet there wasn't even any negotiation needed. It wouldn't surprise me if it was as simple as "Martin, you know we want you, you know you are out first choice, same contract we agreed last year Ok ?" "Itch OK withs Me"

Signed

Ours is a lot more complicated !

and as above post - I agree - thats my take on it as well - hence my bit at the end.

However, you cant go around slagging off fans for just repeating what a well respected journo has just said.

I mean, the same journo said two days ago Ancelotti turned us down - and it seems everyone believes him on that

So you cant have it both ways

We're pretty much down to 3 candidates then now as I see it. Hughes, Benitez, and McLaren.

It has been reported that Hughes doesn't interest the club, so we're down to Benitez and McLaren...it's a no brainer really isn't it? Personally I would have preferred Martin Jol, how do Fulham manage to have someone appointed already whilst we're still no nearer a new boss?

Because Jol was already set up for the position from last time around. Also Fulham probably don't have the same options open to them, and pleased to get Jol,

Moyes won't leave Everton for us, he's waiting (hoping) for a Spurs or Man Utd.

Martinez, we won't poach a manager from another club but if he were available & appointed he would be seen as a long-term appointment.

McClaren would be a risk but would give him a chance if we had to. Good coach but shite manager. Has something to prove but would not get much room for error.

Hughes hasn't done enough in any of his previous posts that suggests to me he's anywhere near good enough to manage us. Vastly overrated, walked out on Fulham (refer to MON) - no thanks.

Benitez has a proven record at the highest level, was hamstrung by the owners of Liverpool in the last few years he was there. He is by far the best candidate.

Can't think of anyone else who has the stature to manage Aston Villa. We won't employ anyone from overseas without PL experience.

MON - not a fecking chance on earth, I think the Generals comments give an indication on their opinion of the 'man'. I hope he never finds employment as a PL manager again.

I was going to type, 'agree' but then thought, what if the ancelotti resting for 6 months thing is rubbish?

In which case, it's still Ancelotti that I want.  Otherwise, 'agree'.
Can't help thinking the same Louzie. He said he's been coaching solidly since 1995 and needs a break, but he's bound to feel shit after Chelsea dumped him. Is Randy on the phone to him now? Has he been on the phone to him already? Am I just wishing, hoping and dreaming?

We know Randy keeps his cards close to his chest - I am just hoping that the 'sabbatical' is a press smokescreen so that we can get a fantastic manager.  It's not totally wishful thinking - if I were in Randy's shoes I would be putting out all the disinformation possible because I would want to be able to talk to the guy without everybody and the world twittering/blogging/posting/publishing about every step of the way.

Hi peeps.

I still believe we are in the hunt for Moyes, and this McClaren speculation is merely a smokescreen to cloud our judgement for the time being. And personally I do not believe Randy would not poach another club's manager.

It is sure going to be hotting up in the next few days.

Fulham have definitely acted fast on this one. Especially as they seemed so pissed off with Hughes leaving so suddenly and thought (think!) we were involved. Unless Jol sees Fulham as a better bet than us it puts to bed all my ideas of our lot having had feelers out for weeks, looking for the best available.

I would be quite excited about Benitez coming here and have been since day one. He's got "big club" experience, PL experience, has won big trophies, always seemed to be tactically pretty astute when I saw his teams play. Yes he has made some dodgy signings in his time but who hasn't? At least he has a radar outside the Prem when signing players.

And if he has the odd meltdown and is rattled by Fergie (who is the master windup merchant anyway) then so be it, at least he shows passion and desire.

Managers that have won big trophies are not to be sniffed at and are few and far between. He'll come here with the intent to win things, not just get in the top 6.

I should be his agent..cracking CV that was ;-)

Sorry, forgot about that one! It still suggests to me that Jol thinks Fulham a better choice than my lovely club! Everyone knows we're a sleeping giant!

I'd be quite happy if Benitez was appointed.

I agree, frankly I'd prefer Benitez over Ancellotti (although Moyes is my first choice).

I was chatting to my Spurs-supporting postman today, who probably knows as little about this whole managerial business as the rest of us. For what it's worth, he thinks that Spurs are lining up Moyes for when Arry gets the England job.

Pretty anti FSW until I logged on tonight. You guys are convincing me that he could be good.

I like Moyes but he's never been one that has caught the eye for me.  He's been at Everton for what 10 odd years (?) and the best they have achieved is 4th and FA Cup runner up I think. Never seems to have a lot of money to play with granted but don't see him as taking up a level from the MON era..
