I'm having a fiver on Ronald Koeman.

Jesus christ no. I honestly would rather have McClaren over that no-lipped baffoon.

I find it hard to believe that, knowing Houllier was quite possibly not coming back, Randy and co would not have started making plans for what to do in that eventuality ages ago, so as not to find ourselves in a mess again.

Given that, and the haste and expense with which we shifted Houllier last week, I would be astonished if we weren't already talking to a number of possible replacements - of the type and availability that made them shift Houllier so quickly in the first place.

I agree paulie. Houllier's departure, with all due consideration to the sensitivity of the situation was very deliberate and calculated in my opinion. The board simply couldn't afford more uncertainty, and I am sure the last thing they want is anything like the upheavals experienced last season. I think, despite the constant links and rumours, they are in the final stages of finding a new manager. Sometimes I get the impression that some news like Hughes not becoming the manager, is only news because he was mistakenly linked to the job in the first place. My hope is that behind the scenes, they have their man, and are dotting I's etc etc

Be careful with the names you're typing in Neil! When I saw Jesus Christ I thought "now there's a good shout - no prem or euro experience but he could certainly work a miracle at vp!"

The catering might improve as well.

Hopeful interview:

Question 1: Are you Steve McClaren?
Answer 1: Yesh.
Question 2: Could you please close the door quietly on your way out?
Answer 2: Shorry to have washted your time.

As I laughed at that all I could visualize is McClaren departing hastily from Randy's office wearing a gold suit with flaky skin.

The Telegraph seems very certain that Benitez isn't coming:

"Villa have ruled out a move for former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez — whose representatives have been pushing hard for talks"

When ever I read the steve McClaren posts I just can't help but hear Sean Connery in my head instead of the Dutch accent.

But no good in coaching goalkeepers on how to handle crosses .

Is it a sign of what Toronto said earlier? Our man is already chosen and it's just a matter of the contract details. With the time gone by since GH's scare I'm pretty sure business has been going on. (But not with McLaren PLEASE!!!)

Trouble is, I can't get past the fact Benitez is a very strong candidate on past performance, far more so than Hughes or bloody Steve bloody McClaren. If there is no talks with him, then I hope whoever they have got is damned good.
