So Hughes is not an autocrat? That is all right then! Hughes means another several years of middling achievement.. demotion no, but also Top 4 highly unlikely!

I think top 4 for Villa at the moment would be unlikely even if we had Jose Mourinho in the dug out. We have to realistic and appoint a manager who would give us that stability for the next few years and beyond. Hughes, Jol, McLaren and possibly Benetez would give us that whereas Carlo would not imo.

As long as we get one of Hughes, Moyes, Ancellotti, Benitez, McLaren or Jol, we'll have a good manager, so I'm quite relaxed about it.

Agreed 100%.

Ancelotti would be a really exciting signing, but we'd have to pay him megabucks and be prepared to really splash the cash on transfers and wages. And he'd still have a helluva job to get us even near the champions league given the competition. I'm not sure we're in a position to go that. Worthy trying of course!

I'm increasingly warming to Hughes as an option. Can't see moyes coming. Benitez the other main contender.

Definitely in a better position than 10 months ago. Jol was the standout option then, now he's one of 6 or 7.

Hughes got fulham to eighth, got man city into top 6 before being sacked and got Blackburn into a cup final and into good league position.

I think he never failed.

He can take us forward.

I can only see him signing bellamy and partnering bent, which could be interesting and also getting best from Ireland.

Ireland and bellamy? Are you taking the piss? why don't we just sign every trouble making c*nt in the league and be done with it.

Sorry but i don't want a manager who can get the best out the likes of Ireland, Warnock and Dunne - I'd much rather they just f**cked off

Mat Kendrick just tweeted that we've 'made a swoop' for Ancelotti! It'll raise a few eyebrows...

Be please with that if it happens. He could attract a decent class of player.

Would be massive, our Ruud Gullit moment. Imagine the respect he would immediately command too. Ash and Downing might think twice.

If we go for Carlo with a serious offer and fail, there can be no complaints. If we get him then we're in for a hell of a ride. Let's do it.

Talksport: Villa at crossroads, Lerner still cares, how messages being sent out would be poor by selling both Young and Downing, not really very much on any new manager but lots on what a big club Villa are, magnificent fan base etc and how they need to get it sorted pdq to stay in the 'top 6'
